Lot 1406: the Cotai Glory colt out of Maremmasanta (Kodiac) from The Forge Stables is bought by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 55,000gns.
Maremmasanta won five races and was placed 18 times, including at Listed level in Italy. This is her third foal, she had a colt by the same sire this spring and was covered by him again.
Cotai Glory's leading runner is the tough hardy two-year-old The Platinum Queen, winner of the Prix de l'Abbaye (G1). She is also out of a mare by Kodiac. (11:11)
Lot 1384: the Whitsbury Manor Stud-bred and consigned Showcasing half-sister to Shouldvebeenaring, Havana Grey's Ripon Champion 2yo Trophy winner, is bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for 115,000gns.
Brown said: "She has been bought for Sheikh Juma for whom we bought Swingalong for last year. He was very keen to buy another Showcasing, we have been beaten on everything we wanted to buy. I saw this filly yesterday morning, I immediately called my vet and then called the Sheikh and said that I thought we'd found one.
"I am delighted to get her, a good update and she comes from a very good farm in Whitsbury. She will go to Karl [Burke], who trains Swingalong. Funnily enough I was looking at her at quarter to eight this morning and Karl came into the yard and I thought, 'I wonder where he will go?!' He came over and pulled her out. So we aligned and luckily Sheikh Juma was willing to have a crack."
Brown added: "If she is half as good as Swingalong we will be alright."
The Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Swingalong, a 2021 Tattersalls Book 2 graduate, bought by Blandford for 120,000gns, was fourth last time out in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1).
"She was the biggest filly in the field there so I think she will get further next year," reasoned Brown. "I would say she she'll start in one of the Guineas trials. Will she get a mile? I don't know, but I think 7f will definitely be within her range. If I was guessing, and it is not my decision, she might turn up at Newbury for the Fred Darling." (10:24)
Lot 1376: the first to 100,000gns this morning is this colt by Night Of Thunder, sold by Ballyhimikin Stud continuing the strong October Sale that James Hanley's farm has enjoyed with the stallion's yearlings.
This lad was bought by Nick Bell, who said: "He is for Peter Trainor, we have bid on a few horses over the last few weeks and hadn't succeeded; I think he'd thought he'd got away without having to buy one! When I saw this horse I loved him and he will be going back to Michael Bell. He will be a nice fun horse for the summer.
"The stallion needs no introduction, and this looks a really solid horse and will hopefully provide a lot of fun. Buying has been tough, I did not think we'd have to give that much for him, but the nice ones you have to give a little bit extra for and I am delighted we have got him."
Night Of Thunder was the leading sire at three-day Book 2 Sale by aggregate – 25 horses sold for a gross of 4,025,000gns. (09:59)

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2
Chairman's statement: At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“Three extraordinary record-breaking days at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale have been followed by a second consecutive record-breaking renewal of Book 2.
“The word most commonly used to describe the trade we have experienced throughout this week has been ‘unrelenting’. There have been records established in pretty well every conceivable category. Turnover, average and median have all reached unprecedented levels and yet again Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has been the second-highest grossing yearling sale in Europe, second only to Book 1. The number of yearlings selling for 200,000 guineas or more is a wide margin record as is the number selling for 300,000 guineas or more and never before have seven yearlings at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale broken the 500,000 guineas mark.
“Following on from Book 1, buyers from America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and throughout the Gulf region have all continued to make significant contributions over the past three days. European buyers have also been conspicuous at all levels of the market while the domestic British and Irish demand continues to be the bedrock of Europe’s largest yearling sale which annually showcases so many of the best commercial yearlings to be found and consistently produces top class horses like this year’s outstanding unbeaten Derby winner Desert Crown.
“The support we receive from so many breeders and consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield is the key to the enduring popularity of the October Yearling Sales at Tattersalls and is hugely appreciated. There is quality to be found at every level and next up is Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale which has produced two of this year's top European two-year-olds; Lezoo, recent winner of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and Crypto Force, the impressive winner of the Group 2 Beresford Stakes." Lot 1321: Ballyvolane Stud achieved a fine result in Book 2 last year when selling the Time Test colt out of Aurelia for 400,000gns, and John Foley's farm has bettered that result this year selling this colt by Starspangledbanner for 600,000gns. It is the farm's best-ever result at Tattersalls.
Last year's six-figure sum came from a pinhooked yearling – this year it is via first foal, bred by The Great Dame Partnership and out of the mare who inspired the partnership's name. A daughter of Dandy Man, she was bought by Barry Lynch at the 2019 December Sale for just 28,000gns.
Trained by David O'Meara, she won twice at two, and her wins included the Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes. She is a half-sister to the Group 3 winer Donnerschlag and the Listed winner Izzy Bizu, and an own-sister to De Boss Man, who finished third in the Round Tower Stakes (G3).
John Foley of Ballyvolane said: "She is owned by myself and good friend Jason Kelly, who is David O'Meara's assistant, and he liked the mare. We bought the syndicate out at the sale and, bred her and this is her first foal.
"I am delighted, he is a lovely, lovely horse – he has always been a mighty sort. He has great action and some of the most respected judges here liked him."
Foley particularly wanted to give a shout out to his staff: "I have very good staff, a great team both here and at home. They put in a huge effort, they are here at 5am in the morning and selling in the evening at 8pm."
The mare has a filly foal by Churchill and was covered in the spring by Ardad.
The colt was bought by Richard Knight, who said: "He was the only one we picked out in this sale, thought he was a lovely individual. He is by Starspangledbanner, who I am a big fan of having had The Wow Signal. I like the fact that the mare was a useful two-year-old herself and he looks like he will be sharp. We felt he will be a great addition to the horses we have already bought. He is a horse who should not take a huge amount of time, he is very athletic and vetted very well." (19:09)
Lot 1303: the sale of this athletic Lope De Vega filly developed into battle between Coolmore and Godolphin, with the latter emerging on top after Anthony Stroud placed a bid of 650,000gns as the dusk started to fall on Park Paddocks.
She was sold by John O'Connor of Ballylinch Stud, the farm having a great day having sold two of the top three lots sold today and both by the farm's stallions.
"Sometimes it just happens like this!" smiled O'Connor. "I knew she'd sell well. I did not expect that, but when you get a clash between two very interested buyers, these things can happen. There there were lots of people on her, too. This is a family we have been associated with a long time – I originally bought Ingabelle [third dam] from Tom Lacy, Tony Lacy's father, and we have bred most of the black-type on this page."
The black-type winners in the pedigree include a number of champions and Group/Grade 1 winners – the 2013 European champion two-year-old filly old Chriselliam, winner of the Fillies' Mile and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She is a half-sister to this filly's dam Gallitea (Galileo). There is also Very Special, a champion older miler in the US and a Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed. She is by Lope De Vega.
Under the third dam is Eva's Request, winner of the Premio Lydia Tesio (G1), and Priory Belle, winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) and a joint-champion Irish two-year-old of 1995.
The most recent black-type addition to the pedigree is the filly's own-brother Oviedo – the two-year-old colt has won and was placed third in Acomb Stakes (G3) since the catalogue went to press.
O'Connor continued: "Lope De Vega's stock appeals to so many people, he is such a good sire we have been blessed to have him. It is wonderful when things go your way, it is almost a surreal feeling."
The filly bounced around the sale ring throughout the bidding, kicking out and enjoying herself, and O'Connor said: "That is the kind of energy she has, and still so full of energy after being busy here. She is a filly with lots of resilience."
The mare had a No Nay Never colt this spring and is back in-foal to Lope De Vega.
Buyer Anthony Stroud said: "It is very exciting, she is very nice, very athletic, it was a good update in the pedigree, she is very light on her feet. She is for Godolphin." (18:37)
Lot 1291: trainer David Loughnane has been busy at Park Paddocks this afternoon buying this son of Siyouni, a grandson of the champion Islington, sold by Fittocks Stud on behalf of Amo Racing. He was accompanied by Tom Pennington of Amo Racing and the pair had to spend 290,000gns on the good-looking colt, having to fight off two persistent online underbidders.
"We thought he is the nicest horse here, an outstanding colt," said Pennington. "He didn't put a foot wrong, by Siyouni whom we love. Kia couldn't be here today but was desperate to have him. He saw him earlier in the week and fell in love with him.
"So, yes, he was the one! We have awaited all day. Luckily, we've got him – we didn't at some stages in the bidding, but we are chuffed to bits. He is the sort of horse we want to buy– he comes from a great farm and has a real pedigree."
Pennington added: "We have found the market very tough, we have underbid so many horses, competition has been incredible."
Loughnane, who is looking forward to training this horse, said: "I am delighted to be bringing home, he will to Ireland to be broken in and come to me in the New Year. We have got the one we wanted. ."
Aside from buying young racehorses for next year and beyond, the trainer's attention will have also be split this afternoon watching today's racing from Nottingham. There the colt King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett), owned by Amo Racing and trained by Loughnane at his Shropshire yard, won the mile EBF maiden, by 4l from the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Nader King (Camelot). The colt holds a Derby entry and has been given a 20-1 quote for the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster later this month. (17:57)
Lot 1264: Ballylinch Stud sells this colt by New Bay for 425,000gns to Anthony Stroud.
The colt is out of the dam Fact Or Folklore, who is by the farm's leading sire Lope De Vega. Her dam Iuturna was a Listed winner in Italy, and was bought by John O'Connor. It is a family that O'Connor supports on the racecourse – he raced the mare to win three races and finished placed at Listed level five times. He has also owned in training her 2019 colt by Make Believe called Self Belief, who has won this year.
However, it is the mare's 2018 filly by Lawman called Statement who has been carrying the flag for the immediate family. She was sold as a yearling by the farm to Dermot Farrington, and was sold again to Stephen Hillen Bloodstock at last year's Tattersalls December Sale for 300,000gns. By then she had run in the 1,000 Guineas and had also collected a Group 3 second place to Alcohol Free in the Fred Darling Stakes and a Group 3 third place in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (G3).
This year she has won the Listed Navigation Stakes and the Group 3 Concorde Stakes.
Of this colt, O'Connor said: "This horse was a beautiful horse, free-moving, well-balanced, and he took everything really well – there were a few who kicked off in the pre-parade ring and he handled it very well. He has got a racehorse mind I think.
"The trainers really like the New Bays, and with the kind of mares he is covering now he has the opportunity now to step to a higher level again. Every horse has to take that opportunity, but we believe he can. The major players are still here and they are still anxious to buy nice horses. There were plenty of bids coming for him from all over the sale ring."
Fact Or Folklore had a colt by Night of Thunder this spring.
Anthony Stroud reported that the colt was bought on behalf of owner Peter Harris, and is going into training with Jane Chapple-Hyam who "has done so well with New Bays". (17:09)
Lot 1243: Watership Down Stud has had a wonderful couple of weeks as a consignor at this year's October Yearling Sale (so far, the farm has sold 16 horses for a turnover of 9,516,000gns, an average price of 594,750gns and has one lot left to go sell), but the farm turned buyer for this lot going to 150,000gns for this filly Kodiac from Tally-Ho Stud.
Out of the winning two-year-old Trade Fair mare Elkmait, she is a half-sister to The Mackem Bullet (Society Rock), who won the Appalachian Stakes (G2) and finished second in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1), the Lowther Stakes (G2), third in the Mrs Revere Stakes (G2), the Princess Margaret Stakes (G3) and the Pin Oak Stakes (G3).
Watership Down's Stud general manager Simon Marsh said: "We don't often buy as yearlings but we have been keen to buy a filly with speed, a lot of the mares on the farm are more middle-distance mares. She is a lovely filly, she walks extremely well, hopefully she will be a two-year-old and she is going to John Gosden.
"It is a nice pedigree and if she performs she will be a lovely filly to have."
Of the fortnight's sales, he said: "It has been an extraordinary time for Watership and Kiltinan, last week beyond our wildest expectations. This week we have sold a very nice Frankel for 450,000gns to Saeed Suhail, which was great for breeder Andrew Rosen. All in all, it has been pretty good."
Of the strength of the market, he reasoned: "The top end of the market has been very strong, the pound is very weak, oil and gas is very expensive, there has been a lot of interest in the horses that we bred in Europe from overseas buyers. We have some fantastic stallions over here – Dubawi, Frankel, Sea The Stars, Wootton Bassett and Siyouni – an extraordinary spread of stallions and they seem to work all over the world." (16:40)
Lot 1226: "I thought he was the best foal here on the Saturday of last year's foal sale," recalled Michael Fitzpatrick of Kilminfoyle Stud after selling this colt by Havana Grey for 325,000gns, now the most expensive yearling by the sire sold at auction to date. "It was just the physical that particularly drew me to him last year. It was big price to give for him as a foal – it has paid off.
Fitzpatrick added: "He looks sharp, and does look a real Royal Ascot two-year-old. Havana Grey has gone from strength to strength this season, and I'd like to wish Karl Burke all the best with him – hopefully he can become the next Havana Grey!
"I would also like to say a huge thanks to all my staff – the hours and work they put in, I couldn't do it without them. It is only for them we are able to do this."
Burke, of course, trained Havana Grey and he said: "This colt is the same strong type, has a good walk to him and is very like the stallion, who has had a fantastic season. We have trained a few by him – they have been winners, hopefully this will be the best."
He added: "It has been great watching Havana Grey this year – not many first-season sires can do what he has done, let's hope it carries on!"
Lot 1233, also by Havana Grey, bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and this time sold by the farm, makes 220,000gns bought by Stroud Coleman. He is out of the winning Sidney's Candy mare Dundunah, a half-sister to Cuvee Uncorked, placed at Grade 2 level in the US. (15:19)
Lot 1203: becomes the most expensive yearling by first-crop sire Calyx sold at auction to date – the colt fetched 170,000gns, bought by MV Magnier.
He was a Bitzen Bloodstock foal pinhook, bought at the Tattersalls December Sale for 65,000gns. He was bred by Emma Capon Bloodstock out of Dazzling Rose (Raven's Pass), whose two-year-old of 2022 has won since the catalogue was published. Named Zicatela (Muharaar) he won at in August at Lingfield and is rated 80.
The mare had a filly foal by Harry Angel this year and was covered by Ardad.
It is the further family of Almanzor, a champion European three-year-old of 2016. (14:13)
Lot 1190: this chestnut filly is added to Shadwell's purchases – by Siyouni, she is out of the Dick Hern Fillies Stakes (L) third-placed Dancing Breeze (New Approach) and made 350,000gns.
She was bred by Merry Fox Stud and sold by The Castlebridge Consignment, and Bill Dwan said: "Craig Bennett and Merry Fox Stud has been a great supporter of ours, I am really pleased with this sale for him. She is a lovely filly, she looks fast and I am delighted that Shadwell have bought her."
Dancing Breeze is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Future Generation (Hurricane Run), dam of Brundtland (Dubawi), winner of the Prix Niel (G2) and the Prix Chaudenay (G2), and the Listed winner Love Child (Dark Angel), who finished second in the Prix de Pomone (G2) in August.
Dancing Breeze was bred by Merry Fox Stud, and is out of Posterity (Indian Ridge) – she was bought at the Tattersalls July Sale for 105,000gns in 2006 (13:40)
Lot 1180: the No Nay Never consigned by Baroda Stud is bought by Charlie Gordon Watson for 325,000gns. The January 5th-born colt is out of the Sixties Icon mare Czabo, the winner of four races, including the Park Express Stakes (G3). She was also placed fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
"I am a big fan of the sire and have also bought Lot 1155 by him this morning," said Gordon Watson. "The first purchase is with Al Shaqab and they will make plans once we get through the autumn."
Czabo has had two runners and both are winners – this year's three-year-old is called Spanish, is in training with William Haggas and has won twice since September. (13:34)
Lot 1134: "I am very happy with that, he is the first foal out of the mare and she was a good tough racemare," said Harry McCalmont of Norelands Stud after selling the colt by Sea The Stars out of the winning and Group 3 placed Acclamation mare Cava for 300,000gns.
"I bred the mare and we bought Royal Fizz, some years ago and she was a wonderful servant for us and bred lots of black-type horses. He is going to Andrew Balding, so am very happy with that, it is so vital for an early foal to go to a good trainer. The one we sold earlier today by Lope De Vega [Lot 1128], he is going to Ralph Beckett, so I am very pleased.
"We had four Sea The Stars yearlings this year, we use him a lot, I think he is just about the best stallion around."
Grand-dam Royal Fizz, dam of the admirable 11-time winner and three-time Group 3 winner, was purchased in 2003 for 19,000gns from Ballymacoll Stud.
Cava had a No Nay Never filly this spring and was covered by Lope De Vega. (11:41)
Lot 1113: top pinhooking hit this morning for Church Farm & Horse Park Stud – this No Nay Never colt consigned by the team makes 360,000gns, purchased by MV Magnier having been bought as a foal at the Tattersalls December Sale for 110,000gns.
John Cullinan, who was standing with Roger Marley in the gangway to watch the horse sell, said: "It was great, we are having and up and down week so that was a good result. He is a lovely horse – we loved him here in December, he is a young May foal, but is No Nay Never out of a Galileo mare. He is a fantastic walker, has a great attitude and the sire has had an amazing year. The whole way through the year, I always thought he was our banker."
The colt was bred by Charlie Brooks out of Bright Sapphire, already the dam of six winners, including Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs), winner of the Herbert Power Stakes (G2) at Caulfield and the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (G3).
Her two-year-old of this year Attaj (Caravaggio), who is owned by HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled and trained by William Haggas, was second in an early October Newmarket maiden on his second career start and he is entered this weekend.
"He’s out of a Galileo mare and is a very good mover,” Magnier said of the purchase. “When we were down there during the week – John Cullinan was always very high on the horse, and he’s sold plenty of good ones in the past.”
Magnier and the Coolmore buying team have been typically active at yearling sales on both sides of the Irish Sea in recent weeks, with their eye-catching purchases including the Frankel three-parts brother to Broome, a 2,400,000gns buy who was signed for in conjunction with Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm.
Magnier reflected on their recent activities by saying: “We’ve got plenty of horses and this sale [Tattersalls October] has been incredible. There are plenty of nice horses here and there were plenty of nice ones in Goffs too.
"We try to keep a spread [of different stallions yearlings] and we like to support people who have supported us a lot. The dreams are always still alive at this time of year.” (10:58)
Lot 1100 and Lot 1108: Shadwell gets off to an early start... this Showcasing filly from the family of Superstar Leo bought by the Angus Gold for 200,000gns.
She was sold by Barton Stud, pinhooked here for 75,000gns. She was bred by Whitsbury Mano Stud
"She is a lovely filly exactly what she looks like, a real Queen Mary Stakes filly," said Tom Blain of Barton Stud. "I am delighted that Shadwell bought her, and wish them all the luck, fantastic to see them buying and such a great supporters of the industry.
Dam Biri's Angel was bred by Wardstown Stud, sold as a yearling and then a breeze-up filly and trained in Italy with trainer Simone Langiano. She won and was Listed placed at Rome before coming to England where she was bought at the Tattersalls February Sale 2019 for 15,000gns by Howson & Houldworth.
Her first foal Quentin (2020 by Adaay) is now a winner in Italy and she was covered this spring by Lope Y Fernandez.
The team then goes to 80,000gns for Lot 1108, a Land Force filly from Bickmarsh Stud, a grand-daughter of the Group 3-placed Capistrano Day and a great grand-daughter of Alcando, winner of the Grade 1 Beverly Hills Handicap , the Prix de Psyche (G3), the Firth Of Clyde Stakes (L) and the Arlington Breeders' Cup Handicap (L).
Dam Born To Day was unraced – this filly is her first foal, she had a colt by Oasis Dream this spring and was also covered by Lope Y Fernandez. (10:26)

Lot 1073: the Night Of Thunder out of Asidious Alexander (Windsor Knot), sold by Mountarmstrong Stud, is bought by Jamie McCalmont, who signed asJamie McCalmont Agent For M V Magnier/White Birch
"He thought he was the best colt in the sale, and was the one horse we wanted to buy today, and we've bought him!" said McCalmont.
The mare was purchased by Mountarmstrong Stud from Rossenarra Stud as a yearling in 2015 and went on to win the Prix Six Perfections (L) and place in the Prix du Calvados (G3) and the Prix d'Aumale (G3).
She is a half-sister to eight winners, including the Listed winner and Flying Childers Stakes (G3) third Accepted, and to May Day Queen, third in the Naas Sprint Stakes (G3).
It is another "best-ever" result... the highest price achieved at Book 2 by the O'Callaghan family's Mountarmstrong Stud. (20:17)
Lot 1048: trainer Roger Varian outpoints Michael Donohoe for the Sea The Stars chestnut colt out of Along Came Casey (Oratorio), a Listed winner and three-times Group 3 placed. The April-born colt was sold by Eugene Daly's Longview Stud, bred by Highview Bloodstock Ltd.
Longview has sold three millionaire lots in Book 1 over the past four years, including this year's Lot 530 (Dubawi ex How) for 1,600,000gns, but this is the farm's best Book 2 result to date.
Varian said: "The stallion can't do much wrong at the moment, the mare was a stakes winner and has bred a very good one already. We had to dig deep to get him, but we are delighted. He is a late summer type, bred for middle distances at three, but you never know how quickly they will come to hand. He was quite a mature horse, although he is quite a big horse, he is quite well grown. He will have a quiet first half of the season and, hopefully, will come into things from August and September. We will see how we go.
"We saw him two or three times, and watched him closely in the ring, he has a lovely way of going. Time will tell how good he is! I thought he is one of the better horses of the week. We followed the yesterday's top lot – that horse [Lot 507, by Sea The Stars] , this horse, and a few more this week have that real Book 1 quality.
"He is for an existing client, and I did not realise he would cost as much as that but he is a very nice horse," added the trainer who was on the phone through the bidding process.
Along Came Casey's first foal Feliciana De Vega won the Darley Stakes (G3) and was Listed placed. (19:24)
Lot 1038: one of the pinhook results of October Book 2 so far – the Saxon Warrior colt converting a foal price of €72,000 to a yearling value of 320,000gns.
The colt was bought as a foal and sold today by Redpender Stud, and the stud owner Jimmy Murphy was beaming after the early evening sale.
"He is a lovely horse, I am delighted to have sold Jake Warren a horse, they are particular men, so the horse must have suited them," said Murphy. "Saxon Warrior is going ok, and trainers seem to be happy with them. That mare has produced tow nice animals already and Dark Angel as a broodmare sire is nice."
When asked what stood out when he bought the colt as a foal, Murphy said: "Well, he was a good sort – in fact similar today!"
The colt's older half-siblings include Hikmaa (Roderic O'Connor), winner of the Radley Stakes (L) and fourth placed in both the Rockfel Stakes (G2) and Fred Darling Stakes (G2), and Inspired Thought (Dandy Man), who was Listed placed in Germany. (18:58)

Lot 1017: another good result through the early evening stint for sire Starspangledbanner – his well-bred colt out of A Huge Dream (Refuse To Bend) is bought by Hugo Merry Bloodstock for 340,000gns.
She was sold by New England Stud and is a half-sister to three winners, including the Oasis Dream dual Listed winner Mrs Gallagher.
A Huge Dream is a half-sister to Xtension, a two-time winner of the Chmpions mile at Sha Tin, to Beatrix Potter, the dam of the two-time Group 1 sprint winner Harry Angel and the Mill Reef Stakes 9G2) winner Pierre Lapin, and to Tiggers Broom, the dam of the Middle Park Stakes winner Supremacy.
The colt was bred by ORS Bloodstock & Stanley House Stud. A Huge Dream (2009) was bred by Paul McCartan and bought as a broodmare at the Arqana December Sale 2013 by Kern Lillingston Bloodstock for €280,000.
White Lavender also comes under the second dam as a daughter of Goodnight And Joy, another half-sister to A Huge Dream. The filly boasts a recent Group 1 update with her second in this month's Prix de l'Abbaye (G1). (18:23)
Lot 1010: Alex Elliott, acting as agent for M V Magnier, bids to 300,000gns for the Lope De Vega filly out of the Listed-placed Sea The Stars mare Yarrow. It is another good result this week for consignor Hillwood Stud a and a yearling by Lope De Vega following yesterdays sale of Lot 669 (Lope De Vega ex Moi Meme).
“She’ll go to Andrew Balding,” said Elliott. "She’s a very good filly. The brother is not a bad horse – he won a Newmarket maiden – and the mare was rated 100 by Sea The Stars. It’s a great staying family, she’ll take a bit of time and I’m delighted to get her.”
The mare, who was bought here by Hillwood for 625,000gns from the Ballymacoll Stud dispersal in 2017, is a half-sister to the Classic winner Golan and the Group 2 winner Tartan Bearer, from the family of the Derby (G1) winner North Light and the Prix du Cadran (G1) winner Sought Out.
Her Lope De Vega colt of 2020 called Tenerife Sunshine was bought by Johnston Racing in Book 1 last year. He won at Newmarket on his second career start in September and ran in the Zetland Stakes (G3) last week.
Yarrow revisited Lope De Vega in 2021 and had a colt this year by the Ballylinch Stud sire. (18:11)
Lot 1008: Chasemore Farm achieved its best-ever result at Tattersalls last week in Book 1 when selling the Kingman colt out of Wall Of Sound (Lot 289) for 750,000gns, and it gets its second-best result today courtesy of the Starspangledbanner colt out of Wowcha, who made 550,000gns. He was bought by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Jack Conroy, stud manager at the farm, said: "We've had a very nice bunch this year. This colt has come up and done everything right, he is a real man of a horse. He has got a stallion's pedigree. His sister has helped a lot, she was always a lovely physical as well.
"All the right people vetted him, we have never been so busy with vets as with this lad. He passed without scrutiny, and they all turned up and followed him in. We were confident he'd go well, maybe not that well!
"Starspangledbanner is such a good stallion and the family had worked already with his uncle The Wow Signal and his older sister. He does not demand such a high fee as some stallions, and perhaps really deserves a bit more respect."
Wowcha was bought as a yearling in 2014 by Chasemore Farm for £150,000 after The Wow Signal had appeared on the racecourse. Sadly, she passed away last winter and this is her last foal. Luckily Chasemore retained Breege. This summer she finished second in the Prestige Stakes (G3) and fifth in the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1), and Conroy reported that she is to be given a Guineas campaign next spring by trainer John Quinn.
Chasemore Farm's owner Andrew Black is currently away playing international level bridge in Copenhagen; Conroy is very much looking forward to making the phone call with today's news from Tattersalls. (17:53)
Lot 991: Ballyshannon Stud gets its best result so far in the Tattersalls sale ring, selling this Sea The Stars colt for 350,000gns on behalf of breeder Angela Roche. The colt was bought by former trainer and breeder Peter Harris.
James Hughes of Ballyshannon said: "It is our biggest result, he has just been a great horse since he arrived here, very settled, very straightforward, he has a great walk about him and it just shows there with the price in the ring. This horse has gone to a good home, and it is fantastic result for a first foal. The credit has to go to the staff at home – they have reared him and produced at home and from the feedback we have been getting we done okay!
"Sea The Stars is a phenomenal stallion, he has improved so much over the years and is only going to get better."
The colt is out of the Elzaam mare Waitingfortheday, the winner of seven races, including the Fairy Bridge Stakes (G3) and placed fourth in the Blandford Stakes (G2).
Hughes recalled: "The mare came to the farm and we organised a foal share to the stallion and this is the result. She has a very nice full-sister to the colt at home."
The mare was covered by El Kabeir this spring.
Hughes bought Ballyshannon, near Suncroft, County Kildare, with his late mother Fiona in 2000, who sadly passed away in February.
"She would have got a great kick out of this," rued Hughes. "It would have been great to have had here, too."
There are five home-owned mares on the farm, with another 22 boarders. Hughes also manages the farm for breeder Con Harrington.
"Keeps me busy, we have two to sell for Con tomorrow [Lot 1232 and Lot 1357], let's hope he gets good result."
Peter Harris was very pleased with his purchase, his second through Book 2 and he has a list with a few for the rest of the week.
"Jane Chapple-Hyam is going to train him. He is a great walker and an attractive colt. I like first foals – you start with clean sheet. I never go for first-season sires because 75 per cent of them are no good. I think it is a better percentage with the first two foals out of a mare – you do much better than the average," he said, adding: "This is, of course, a theory that is entirely unproven!"
"I am not a breeder nor a trainer. (17:13)
Lot 974: vindicated Fittocks Stud's decision to retain at the filly at the foal sales last year when a vendor buy-back for 130,000gns – she sells today for 425,000gns bought by BBA Ireland. Underbidders were Shadwell and Juddmonte.
"She is not the biggest," said Sara Cumani of Fittocks. "We thought she'd change and develop over over the year, and be worth keeping for now, which she has and luckily we kept her.
"Frankel has had an amazing year, and such a strong Book 1. We put the filly in Book 2 because we thought she might be a little bit lost with the great big Frankels in Book 1. We couldn't be happier with that result. She is a real pocket rocket, we wish the new connections the best of luck."
Of the mare, Cumani said: "We bought Via Lazio in 2019 carrying to Zoustar – that foal is called named From Beyond, is a nice filly with Roger Charlton and he likes her a lot. Via Lazio is a young mare and from a great family, and she is in-foal to Time Test and had a Sea The Moon filly this year. She is a really nice foal and a bigger sort."
Buyer Michael Donohoe said: "Frankel is outstanding sire, and this is a lovely, sweet filly. She looks racey and is probably a precocious type. She should come to hand early. We will send her to Ireland, get her broken in and decide on a trainer in either England or Ireland. She is for an existing client who has had some luck with the sire before." (16:49)

Lot 930: regular Tattersalls leading consignor Ballyhimikin Stud hits the heights again, the farm selling this Night Of Thunder colt out of the Dansili mare Syndicate to Anthony Stroud for 340,000gns.
James Hanly said: "He is a beauty, the sire did not do any harm either – I should put up a statue of him!
"It is a lovely result and credit to the staff and the people on the farm. He goes to John Gosden, so we can hopefully look forward to him being a good racehorse. The mare is in-foal to Night Of Thunder. The pedigree has really come good since we bought her. My friend John Feane trained her and won with her in England, she showed a lot of ability. Johnis a greatman and a good trainer and there are a lot of very good smaller scale trainers in Ireland."
At this autumn's October Yearling Sale, Ballyhimikin has sold the following lots by the Darley sire:
Lot 327: Night of Thunder (IRE) / Alienate (GB) Ch.F. (IRE) >>Cheveley Park Stud >>425,000gns
Lot 463: Night of Thunder (IRE) / Elshaadin (GB) B.C. (GB)>>Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock>>475,000gns
Lot 781: Night of Thunder (IRE) / Purplest (GB) B.F. (IRE) >>Blandford Bloodstock>>270,000gns
Lot 930: Night of Thunder (IRE) / Syndicate (GB) B.C. (IRE) >>Stroud Coleman >>340,000gns
The farm has Lot 980 and Lot 1376 to sell also by Night Of Thunder, as well as another three lots – Lot 1027 (Blue Point), Lot 1094 (Dark Angel) and Lot 1354 (Blue Point). (14:42)
Lot 900: another great result for a young team of foal pinhookers, this time the all-female group who called themselves The Gals Gals. The crew hit on this colt by this year's leading first-season sire Havana Grey at last year's December Foal Sale purchasing him for 21,000gns from Daymark Stud. Today the girl group, with Kildaragh Stud, sold the colt for 150,000gns to Oceanic Bloodstock for White Birch Farm SC.
The team – Alice Kavanagh of Kildaragh Stud, Florence Cain, who has worked at Kavanagh and works in bloodstock admin and bookkeeping, Nicola Short, who works the sales for Kildaragh and is a full-time mum when not on sales duty, and Fay Cort, who is the assistant manager at Carrisbrooke Stud and has also worked with Kavanagh – were all smiles after the sales chatting over the experience standing in the sun of the Lower Sale Paddock by the Kildaragh Stud draft.
"We are obviously absolutely delighted, the girls came together last year and we thought about buying a foal together," said Kavanagh. "We were beaten on a couple, but were successful buying him towards the end of the sale. We are all heavily involved in the industry and wanted to pool our money together and have a go at pinhooking. We have been extremely lucky with how well Havana Grey has done, we couldn't expected that and it was a pretty risky year to go with a first-season sire. We were incredibly lucky he has done so well and this colt was liked as soon as we got here."
Of the decision to buy him last year, Nicola recalled: "I was consigning a foal for a friend, we were in the Solario barn and he was next to me. I had been watching him all week – he'd behaved really well all week and could really walk. Alice had been around looking at everything and she had him on her list, too. She came to us all and said 'What about this one?'
"He was late in the day so we all had a look at him together, and we all just liked him."
Since then, What's App has kept the group updated with progress as Florence said: "We have had a group since we have bought him as some of us are in England and Alice is in Ireland. Alice has been great on updates. There was a point a couple of months ago when he'd had just a week or ten days of prep, he was filling out and really looked like an actual horse. That was when my tummy went, and I thought 'Oh lord!' We tried not to get too excited, you never know what is going to happen going up to the ring, so to get the result today is unreal."
When asked how they are going to celebrate, Fay laughed: "I think it is going to be a big night! There will be some champagne drunk, but it is well earned!"
Alice adding: "We will have a really nice supper and then think about reinvesting."
Bred by Josh Cameron of Daymark Stud, the colt is the first foal out of the mare Speculating (Xtension), a half-sister to Danehill Kodiac, winner of five races, including the Cumberland Lodge Stakes (G3). He has also been placed 14 times, on four occasions in stakes races.
Speculating had a Showcasing colt this spring and was covered by Sergei Prokofiev. (13:53)
Lot 873: the sale of the Exceed And Excel colt for 270,000gns gives the brothers Tom and David Brickley of Ard Erin Stud a top sale ring result – the pair had purchased the colt here as a foal for 50,000gns. It is the first six-figure result the duo has achieved at Tattersalls.
"It is a super result, he is an absolute dude of a horse, an absolute dude – Sakheer came up, too, and the stars aligned, it is exciting stuff," they said in unison.
Explaining why they picked the colt out as a foal last year, they said: "We thought he had a lot of quality, he was very attractive as a foal and he was by a proven sire. The mare is a tried and tested and he was from a proven farm – we think it is important to buy from a good, proven farm.
"He has been straightforward all the way through, he think he is a champion. Let's hope he is an Ascot two-year-old for next year – we have never been to Royal Ascot!"
The boys bought seven foals last year upping the number from the three bought in year one, and they reported that they will be back here on a buying mission next month saying, "We will try and do it all over again!"
Before Sakheer's appearance this year, the colt's mare Shortmile Lady (Arcano) had already produced Lemista (Raven's Pass), winner of the Kilboy Estate Stakes (G3) and placed third in the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes. All her offspring have been bred by the Conor and Deirdre Cashman's Drumlin Bloodstock and Yellowford Farm has consigned her foals.
They have one yearling left to sell in Book 3 – Lot 1542, a Zoffany filly out of the Oasis Dream mare Unified. She was bought by Highpoint Bloodstock for €10,000. (12:38)
Lot 862: Chris Richardson of Cheveley Park Stud spends 320,000gns on this Kodiac filly from Tally-Ho Stud. She is an own-sister to Indestructible, recently second in the Champagne Stakes (G2) to the subsequent Dewhurst Stakes (G1) winner Chaldean. The 107-rated colt was also previously second to the son of Frankel in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (G3).
This year the family has also produced Shartash (Invincible Spirit), who finished third in the Phoenix Stakes (G1) and the National Stakes, and fourth in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1).
"It is a very happening family, we are looking for a couple of sharper types this week, so we are delighted to have got her," said Richardson. "She is a very nice athletic filly. It is a line that is a good outcross for the stallions. Mrs Thompson will make a decision on trainers and will assess everything after the next couple of days and decide what to do with two fillies bought last week and what we buy this week. "
Of the market, Richardson commented: "I think it has been remarkably strong, there are some certain areas where you get a bit of feast or famine, but if the individuals are there the buyers are tempted and if the pedigrees and physicals match up then you can get a good sale." (11:56)
Lot 853: the Andrew Rosen and Edward Easton-bred son of Frankel, the 450,000gns colt out of the mare September Stars (Sea The Stars), is bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for Saeed Suhail.
"He is a smashing colt, we tried on a load of Frankels last week and did not get close. He is an immature horse, he needs a little bit of imagination, but there is a lot of improvement to come, he is a big frame. He will be given plenty of time and hopefully will reward us as a three-year-old," said Brown.
September Stars was bought for the breeders by Hugo Merry at the 2014 October Book 1 Sale for 260,000gns. She went on to win five times and collect a Listed placed result in the Possibly Perfect Stakes. She is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Teodoro and from the family of the two-time Grade 1 winner Angara and the 1993 European champion Arcangues, Artiste Royal and Aquarelliste.
The cross of Frankel over mares by Sea The Stars has produced the Group 1 winner Onesto, winner of this year's Grand Prix de Paris, the Group 3 winner Mohaafeth and the Group 3 placed Dubious Affair. (11:46)
Lot 847: the Too Darn Hot filly out of Secret Sense (Shamardal) is bought by Shadwell Estate for 320,000gns. She was sold by Newsells Park Stud and is the third yearling sold out of the mare to fetch over 300,000gns.
"She looks a very tough filly, there is a masculine look about her and plenty of Shamardal, she is a good mover," said Shadwell's Angus Gold. "For us that is quite appealing and aremit of what we are trying to do – find fillies with pedigrees, she has one of the best pages in the book.
"I saw her at the farm last week, and liked her and Sheikha Hissa liked her and was very keen to get her. She is first from the family that we have got so it is very nice to get something," he added.
Dam Secret Sense is a half-sister to the Group 1-winning Galileo brothers Japan and Mogul, the Group 2 winner Secret Gesture (Galileo), the Group 3 winner Sir Isaac Newton (Galileo) and Maurus (Medicean), a Listed winner in Australia. They are, of course, all out of the former top Newsells broodmare Shastye, who died in May. (11:29)
Lot 845: the first to 200,000gns this morning, is the colt by Farhh sold by Clearwater Stud, the dam Sea Chorus is a Singspiel half-sister to the four-time Group 1 winner Soldier Hollow. He was bred by Mr Kenny Kok, and the mare has already produced two black-type horse headed by Seaside Song, winner of the Lanwades Stud Stakes (L). (11:07)

The chestnut colt is a half-brother to the Night Of Thunder filly Stormy Girl, winner of the Listed Flying FIllies Stakes and placed third in the Renaissance Stakes (G3). Dam Refusetolisten (Clodovil) is a half-sister to Miss Phillyjinks (Zoffany), the dam of Tiger Tanaka, winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1).
Sioux Nation is now the sire of 39 winners in Europe and two Group winners – Lakota Sioux, winner of the Sweet Solera Stake (G3), and Sydneyarms Chelsea, who won the Prix Six Perfections (G3). (20:22)
Lot 787: the bidding opened up at 100,000gns, climbed quickly and developed into a battle between Will Douglass and an online bidder. Douglass employed some strong bidding tactics, but the computer bidder responded and was not to be denied eventually winning out at 700,000gns.
The colt, bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, was sold by the Swinburn family's Genesis Green Stud.
Outside the ring Michael Swinburn said: "He came to us this time last year. He was originally for Book 1 – it is nice page and it is a hell of a cross [Frankel over Dubawi]. He just toed in a tad, nothing extravagant, but, when we had to make our mind up for the sale, he is a big horse and then he was quite tall and narrow, so the owners decided on Book 2.
"During prep he has just gone 'whoop' and turned into a Dubawi with a Frankel walk. He just a beautiful horse to deal with as most Frankels are. I am delighted with the price."
Of the decision to sell in Book 2, he added: "We knew we had a good horse and Book 2 is a great sale, too, usually the same people are here."
Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland was the agent behind the computer and bidding online.
He said: "The colt is by the sire of the moment, Frankel is doing everything on the race track and in the sale ring – the two hottest sires are top and bottom of the pedigree as he is out of the Dubawi mare. This colt is a great individual and wouldn't have looked out of place in Book 1. We are surprised by the price we had to give, it was our last bid but we are delighted to have got him."
There are three more chances to buy a Frankel this week with Lot 853 (colt ex September Stars from Watership Down Stud), Lot 974 (filly out of Via Lazio from Fittocks Stud) and Lot 1231 (filly out of Dulcian from Corduff Stud) due to sell. (19:31)
Lot 763: the Saxon Warrior colt from Glenvale Stud, bought for €60,000 as a foal, bred by James Kehoe, sells today for 300,000gns.
"I am really pleased, I like the horse and I like the stallion," said today's buyer Roger Varian. "We have three by him at home and we ran a nice colt the other day who was second on debut and have a couple of fillies who are starting to come through. I have been keeping an eye on the stallion's stock, and I bought a filly by him last week.
"I am very pleased to secure this colt, I thought he is a good individual, he vetted well and has a good page. He is by a sire we are following and is for an existing client."
Of the colt's likely profile for next year, Varian said: "I think he looks like a July-onwards horse, he is quite mature and he does not have a lot of growing left to do. The stallion's stock they look like they are types from July onwards so I don't expect him to be too early."
The colt is out of the 94-rated winning Dansili mare Pour Deux, a half-sister to the Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Ancient Rome, and from the family of the Epsom Derby (G1) winner Pour Moi and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Pizza Bianca. (18:35)
