Tattersalls August Sale 2023
Chairman’s Statement:
At the conclusion of the 2023 Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“The is only the fourth renewal of the Tattersalls August Sale and numerically the smallest and while we may have been a little short of obvious stars there has been solid demand throughout the day with overseas buyers very much to the fore.
"Typically for sales of this nature at Tattersalls, buyers from throughout the Gulf region have been particularly active, most notably from Saudi Arabia where the racing continues to go from strength to strength. European, Australian and American buyers have also been active and the domestic demand, both Flat and National Hunt, has been evident at all levels of the market as has the widespread use of the online bidding platform which continues to prove its worth in a busy sales calendar.
“While the figures have fallen short of previous renewals of the Tattersalls August Sale, the fixture offers a valuable service for owners and trainers and is immediately followed by the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, which takes place Tuesday 5th September and has enjoyed a run of spectacular results in recent weeks.
"The Group and Grade 1 winners Bradsell and Anisette have flown the Somerville flag at the very highest level in Britain and America alongside last week's Group 2 Lowther winner Relief Rally and Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb winner Indian Run and we look forward to building on this success next week.”

Lot 287:
the twice-raced two-year-old American Pharoah colt Maximum Dividend generates today's top price when selling for 200,000gns, bought by Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock.
The colt, sold by East Everleigh Stables for a partnership of Westerberg, Smith, Magnier and Tabor, has been placed on his two starts – he finished second at the beginning of July at Sandown and then third at Newbury at the end of that month.
He is out of the Group 3 winner and Group 2-placed mare Sizzling (Galileo) and from the family of the champion US colt A P Indy.
Haggas said: "He is the first foal out of a good staying Galileo mare and by a sire whose stock improves a lot with age – American Pharoah himself got better with racing. I hope this horse will do the same and is going to be a horse to improve from two to three and a bit beyond, and stay a bit further than the 7f."
He added: "He has run two very good races, the first was particularly eye-catching at Sandown and the form looks good – the winner goes for the Solario tomorrow and the third is a Listed winner. He is sound and looks sound of mind, too."
Rounding up his thoughts on the colt, Haggas concluded: "He is a nice straightforward horse who I hope will go and do well in Australia – he is going into training with John O'Shea, I have been working with his and his team. I like this horse's profile – he should improve and if he does he should be competitive for his new connections."
Of the link up with O'Shea, Haggas outlined: "This is the first horse I have bought with them, we tried on a few in July – it is good to get one so, hopefully, it will be a good start together."
(17:23)
Lot 261:
"He looks a progressive type, and came recommended by William Haggas," said Oliver St Lawrence after spending 105,000gns on Bleak, a Highland Reel gelding with a BHA rating of 89.
"He is for Fawzi Nass, and will probably go to Bahrain," added the agent. "He had a bit of blip on his last start, but his profile overall is good."
The gelding, bred by London Thoroughbred Services Ltd and owned in training by James Wigan, won off 75 at the beginning of June, finished second at York off 87 in July and then took a mid-division spot at Yarmouth this month.
It was a proud father moment for St Lawrence... both his daughters Alicia and Rosanna are working at Tattersalls on sales days this autumn – today is Rosanna's first day and she is working with the bloods team, while Alicia is collecting sales docket.
She carefully checked that Dad had filled in the form as required.
(17:07)
Lot 236:
trainer David O'Meara, standing on the top of the bidders, spends 130,000gns on Noble Truth, a son of Kingman and a winner of the Jersey Stakes (G3). He is also a dual Listed winner (at two and three) and as a juvenile finished second in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1), fourth in the Acomb Stakes (G3) and the Horris Hill Stakes (G3).
He has run 10 times, won four races, finished placed twice, picked up over £214,00 in earnings and has a rating of 112.
His last run came in January when down the field in the Al Fahidi Fort (G2) in Meydan.
"There is no plan!" said O'Meara when asked of the plans with the four-year-old gelding. "He is a very good horse with some high-class form, we will get him home and go from there. I can't say who he is for yet."
(15:55)
Lot 235:
Mark McStay goes again, buying Aldous Huxley for 95,000gns for the same Salem bin Ghadayer connections as for Lot
190.
The colt has some decent form, including when second last time out in the Cocked Hat Stakes (L) at Goodwood in May.
"I am delighted to get him, a very high class horse on the best of his form – the run against Lionel looks a very good effort," said McStay, adding: "He has had his issues but Godolphin is always very transparent with the history of its horses. He is bound for Dubai and, if he regains his form, he could be a very high-class horses when he gets there."
Before Avenue Bloodstock, McStay spent some years working at Godolphin/Darley and said: "It is a pedigree I know well from my time with Godolphin and this is one of the organisation's best families. The thing abut Dubawis, as we have all witnessed, is that they can overcome problems and he wouldn't be the first Dubawi to come back from injury to do well."
Aldous Huxley is out of the Listed-winning Group 2 placed Arch mare Albasharah, also the dam of the black-type placed Al Nefud, also a son of Dubawi.
Albasharah is a half-sister to the Fillies' Mile (G1) winner White Monstone (Dynaformer).
(15:46)
Lot 219:
Godolphin's winning Kodiac filly Spring Dawn is bought by an absent Tally-Ho Stud for 80,000gns.
The three-year-old filly last ran at Ascot when third in a fillies' handicap over a mile.
She is a half-sister to four winners, including Firebird Song, a Listed-winning Invincible Spirit filly. It is also the family of the sire Territories, who is also by Invincible Spirit, and Spring Dawn's fourth dam is the Group 1 winner Helen Street, the dam of Street Cry and grand dam of Shamardal.
Spring Dawn won in July over 7f at Newmarket having previously twice finished second at Newmarket in April and May, also over 7f. She did not race as a juvenile.
(15:20)
Lot 195:
a second purchase today by Marco Bozzi Bloodstock for SBS Global – the team going to 115,000gns for French Claim, a four-year-old son of French Fifteen and the holder of Classic black-type thanks a third in the Irish Derby (G1). He also finished second on his last start in April in the Vintage Crop Stakes (L), as a three-year-old was third in the Derby Trial (G3) and in his debut season as a juvenile finished fourth in the Eyrefield Stakes (G3).
A smiling Bozzi said: "Prince Saud Bin Salman loved the horse, he liked the rating and his races. The horse is very nice, he moves very well. In Saudi they don't really have such fast ground and the Dirt is quite deep at both Riyadi and Ta'if so it might work for him. He has not run since April, but his trainer [Paddy Twomey] said that as the ground has been too fast for him."
Prince Saud Bin Salman is at Tattersalls today and Bozzi explained: "The Prince was in London on holiday and saw the sale was taking place and wanted to come along. He has had a good day!"
(14:46)
Lot 190:
Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock spends 80,000gns on Imperial Ace sold by The Castlebridge Consignment for Manor House Stables.
"I bought him here as a yearling on spec for Hugo Palmer," said McStay. "He is a lovely horse, very straightforward, he looked very promising early in the season. The gelding operation has improved him, he has shown he is on an upward curve. I think he will definitely go on and the trainer was very happy to recommend the horse.
"He is very sound, vetted cleanly and I think he will goon faster ground. Hugo and his team have down a great job and he is to race on in the UAE for a client of Salem bin Ghadayer. I am very happy to get him, he is a nice horse."
Imperial Ace has run seven times, won twice and finished placed twice. He was second last time out over 1m2f at Chelmsford off a rating of 88.
(14:37)
Lot 187:
Onight is off to the sunnier climes of Dubai, bought for 62,000gns by agent Ramzi Alghul on behalf of Yaaas TV pundit and racehorse owner Tawfiq AbdulRahman.
Alghul, who is based in the north of England, said: "He is tough horse, we think he is tough enough for Dubai and he vetted well. The Oasis Dreams do well in Dubai, I think he is sound. We think a lot of him and he will do well."
Onight won in the middle of August over 7f and off a BHA mark of 87, he is now rated 92.
(14:31)
Lot 128:
Think First has been bought from Jamesfield Stables (James Tate) with a NH career in mind, the colt purchased for 70,000gns by Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock. He was bidding from the back wall and standing with trainer Neil Mulholland.
Bromley explained the story behind today's purchase.
"Although he is a distant cousin, this is the first horse I have bought for owner Richard Flower," said Bromley. "Richard wanted to buy a nice jumper, one to go three-year-old hurdling and he got in touch with me to find a horse. Think First is a very good-looking horse, a very supple horse, he has possibly been a bit over faced in a few of his races but he ran well last time in a handicap off a mark 95. We will get him gelded and he goes to Neil Mulholland, and should be a fun horse.
"He has gone on soft ground in a Listed race in April when fourth. James Tate gave the horse a good write up, so fingers crossed."
Bromley added: "I like the idea of this sale, and this date – if you buy a colt [to go hurdling] at the end of October, you don't know whether to geld hm or not. We will get this horse cut now, and we are six weeks ahead."
Think First is by Kessaar and out of the four-time winning Shamardal mare Willow Beck, a half-sister to the Yorkshire Cup (G2) winner Franklins Gardens (Halling). Further down the pedigree is the good hurdler Rayvin Black, winner of the Kingwell Hurdle (G2).
(12:42)
Lot 114:
is our first to a six-figure sum today, Pivotal Revive makes 100,000gns and is bought by Marco Bozzi Bloodstock.
"He is for my client Prince Saud Bin Salman and SBS Global," reported Bozzi. "The horse will go to Saudi for the autumn season. He is by Pivotal, looks progressive, is a nice type and vetted well. He will be trained by the prince's trainer Ahmad Abdulwahed, who trained Emblem Road to Saud Cup success. The trainer will make a plan for the colt once the horse settles into the new routine."
The three-year-old colt, who has run four times and won a mile maiden at Leopardstown on August 24, was sold by Baroda Stud for Jessica Harrington's Commonstown Stables and for owner Zhang Yuesheng, who purchased him through BBA Ireland/ Yulong Investments for €45,000 as a yearling.
Pivotal Revive was bred by Cheveley Park Stud and is out of the Prix Six Perfections (G3) winner Tigrilla (Clodovil).
(12:24)
Lot 74:
Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock goes to 20,000gns for Fleet Admiral (No Nay Never).
The brown colt is out of Fleeting Fancy (Galileo), a placed daughter of Just Pretending (Giant's Causeway), winner of the Group 3 Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial, runner-up in the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2) and third in the Irish Oaks (G1) and the Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1).
Fleet Admiral, sold by Park House for Godolphin, has run three times and finished third and fourth twice over distances from 7f to 1m2f.
(11:37)
Lot 65:
Bint Havana Grey, a two-year-old daughter of Havana Grey who has run four times and finished placed on all those starts, is bought by Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland on behalf of a client in the Middle East as a racing prospect.
She is out of the Royal Applause mare Perfect Cover, the dam of six winners from nine foals. It is the further family of Peak To Creek and Ripples Maid and the Japanese Group 1 runner Mikki Charm.
Bint Havana Grey was sold by Richard Hughes's Weathercock House Stables for Rabbah Bloodstock.
(10:59)
Lot 31:
Emirates Angel, a two-year-old filly by Harry Angel, and a winner since the catalogue was published, is bought by Will Douglass (Charlie Gordon Watson Bloodstock) for 40,000gns.
She was sold by the training stable of Alice Haynes Racing for owner Ahmad Alshaikh. The filly has run three times, twice in August when finished third at Bath over five and a half furlongs and then winning at Chepstow earlier this week over 7f.
She is the first foal out of the Acclamation mare Designation.

Coolnaugh Haze, by Lawman and out of Midas Haze (Pivotal), sold by Sandhill Racing Stables (P. Hobbs) goes to James Owen Racing for 22,000gns.
He is a two-time, two-mile winner over hurdles and is rated 118.
(14:47)
Lot 79:
one of the expected top lots of the day did not disappoint – interested parties were standing right around the ring, and were also busy online, and wildcard entry Midnight Lion, a June Goodwood winner over 1m6f, is sold by Charlie Johnston's Kingsley Park on behalf of Rabbah Bloodstock for 85,000gns.
He was another purchase by Nick Taylor for Tom Malone Bloodstock and this son of Nathaniel has a jumping future ahead of him.
"He was clearly the pick of the day for us, and he has been bought for Paul Nicholls," said Taylor, who is heading to Fairyhouse next week for the two-day Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale.
"We liked him when we saw him, Nathaniel is a big plus to go jumping, he has a lovely soft ground action and is just the type of horse we are looking for. He has the size and Charlie Johnston was very positive about him.
"He stays, and there is a good hurdler in the pedigree too – Eradicate is a half-brother. We just need to be a bit lucky now!"
Midnight Lion is already a two-time Tattersalls graduate – he was a 30,000gns 2020 Tattersalls December Foal, sold by Crimbourne Bloodstock to Peter and Ross Doyle, progressing to Tattersalls October Book 1 in 2021. He was sold then by Kildaragh Stud to Johnston Racing for 60,000gns.
(13:50)
Lot 74:
from the Rabbah Bloodstock draft, the progressive Laafi goes to an online bid from Stephensen Bloodstock of 72,000gns.
The 95-rated son of Cloth Of Stars from William Haggas's Somerville Lodge was a maiden winner in October as a juvenile. He has run twice this year when fourth in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial and was then down the field in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot. He has run just four times.
The colt is a grandson of the Group 1-placed Mare Nostrum (Caerleon), the dam of the Group 1 winner Erupt, successful in the Grand Prix de Paris.
(13:39)
Lot 60:
the five-time winner Letmelivemylife is bought by Tom Malone Bloodstock, Nick Taylor at the sales ground and in charge of bidding. Taylor had to go to 35,000gns to secure the five-year-old gelding by Oasis Dream.
Consigned by Sean Curran Racing, Letmelivemylife last won in April off a mark of 81 under jockey Adam Kirby, who has ridden him twice and was in the ring to watch the gelding sell.
"He has been bought for Charlie Pike, currently assistant to trainer Barry Brennan, and is going to train himself," said Malone, who also purchased at the Guineas Breeze Up Sale for Pike.
(13:18)
Lot 51:
Timeless Melody (Teofilo), an April winner for William Haggas and consigned by Somerville Lodge, makes 42,000gns with Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman signing the docket.
"She has been bought for the French-based Jedburgh Stud and Alex Waugh," said Coleman. "Anthony [Stroud] has done bits and pieces for Alex before. Alex has had a lot of luck, as many people have, with mares by Teofilo and he is a phenomenal broodmare sire, and getting better and better. Timeless Melody has won on softer ground and there is a possibility she might run again in France this autumn, but she has been bought as a broodmare and will be covered next spring.
"The pedigree is working out quite well – Bridestones, a Teofilo daughter of the second dam, the Group 1 winner White Moonstone, got some black-type at Sandown and she might win a stakes race by the end of the season."
He added: "She is out of Dubawi mare and out of a Dynaformer mare and so there are three lovely broodmare sires on the page. We thought we might get her a bit cheaper and that was the top of what we wanted to pay, but she is a good-looking mare."
(12:53)
Lot 41:
Lady Of Sardinia, a winner just last night at Windsor, is another heading Qatar's way – the daughter of Twilight Son bought by trainer Debbie Mountain for owner Hassan Al-Abdulmalik.
The filly cost her new connections 28,000gns, and is another with involvement from RMM Bloodstock – Mills having bought the filly as a yearling for 14,000gns at the October Book 3 Sale last year. He reconsigned her at the Guineas Breeze Up Sale and bought her back in. She has been trained since then by Stuart Williams, running four times and winning twice.
"She will hit the early races, the 1200m and 1400m races, we have a lot of two-year-old races this year," explained Mountain. "Hopefully, she will then progress well into her three-year-old season over the same sort of distance. She likes top of the ground."
"I watched her race last night but she was on our radar anyway. I saw her pictures online, she is nice and has a good temperament."
Mountain added of her reasoning to buy a two-year-old: "The two-year-old programme is very good this year, and it gives us a chance to progress with a horse into its three-year-old season.
As you saw last week at the July Sale the three-year-old market is very strong , this suits us, gives us a chance to buy and also a bit of longevity.
"If we can buy a reasonable two-year-old, acclimatise them to the conditions in Qatar, and then run at three and a lot of them can be very competitive at three in the bigger races. It also gives time to give a two-year-old a break. We bought some nice two-year-olds last year and we are doing the same again."
(12:33)
Lot 34:
Armando Duarte spends 20,000gns on the Woodland Stables and Nigel Tinker-consigned gelding Prodigious Blue (Bated Breath) on behalf of regular Tattersalls buyer, the Qatar-based trainer Ibrahim Al Malki.
"I have bought a few for Ibrahim before," said Duarte, "and he called me up to take a look at this horse. He asked me to video him, which I did this morning, and Ibrahim liked what he saw and trusted my judgement. I hope he does well in Qatar and should suit the decent sprints there."
Prodigious Blue is the winner of two races over 5f off a BHA mark of 70.
(12:05)
Lot 6:
Rogue Fox is bought by RMM Bloodstock for 18,000gns and the son of Kodiac is shipping to Doha to continue his racing career.
"He has been bought for owner Osama Omer E Al-Dafea," said buyer Robbie Mills of RMM Bloodstock. "We have a few Qatari-based clients who we buy for and we have enjoyed some success.
"This horse is a solid type, and looks as though he will handle the conditions. He looks a nice sound horse to go forward with and run around a bend. He looks a physical to do that."
Rogue Fox is out of the unraced Tagula mare Cionn Tsaile, a half-sister to Danehill Kodiac, winner of the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes. The three-year-old gelding was sold by Tom Clover Racing and has run twice.
At the 2019 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale, RMM Bloodstock purchased Taxiwala for 10,000gns. The son of Holy Roman Emperor is now a Qatari three-time winner with one success coming at Listed level. He has also finished second in the Dukhan Sprint.
"It is good to see some new faces here," added Mills when asked about the sale at Newmarket. It will not take Mills long to get home – he is based at Bill O'Gorman's Seven Springs Stables on Newmarket's Hamilton Road.

Tattersalls July Sale 2023
July Sale 2023 sales statement
At the conclusion of the 2023 Tattersalls July Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“To have bettered last year’s wide-margin record-breaking Tattersalls July Sale turnover is a clear indication of the robust and vibrant market, which year after year, makes this fixture so popular with vendors and purchasers alike.
“The key feature of the Tattersalls July Sale is its unique combination of quality and diversity, which cannot be found anywhere else at this time of year and, as ever, Park Paddocks has been alive with a global melting pot of buyers from every continent in the world who have faced strong competition from British and Irish buyers, both Flat and National Hunt.
“A record 12 lots making in excess of 200,000gns and 35 selling for 100,000gns or more demonstrates the strength at the top of the market, but equally important has been the consistent demand at all levels resulting in a record-equalling median and for the fifth consecutive year the Tattersalls July Sale has achieved an enviable clearance rate above 90%.
"While the high-class consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates have as ever proved to be amongst the highlights of the July Sale we have also seen some smaller operations spectacularly rewarded, none more so than Tipperary based trainer Michael O’Meara and owner Emma Kennedy whose three year old homebred Ethical Diamond sold for 320,000gns.
"Results of this nature are the hallmark of mixed sales at Tattersalls and we now look forward to the Tattersalls Summer Sale, relocated from Ascot, which numbers 120 lots and takes place at Park Paddocks in Newmarket on Tuesday 18th July."

Lot 902:
all of the day's bidders were in the ring to see the Godolphin-consigned Tabaretta (Dubawi), winner of handicap at Wolverhampton in January, go through the ring, activity was brisk and from opposing ends of the ring.
Eventually it was Jimmy George of Tattersalls taking instructions over the phone who was successful at 210,000gns buying on behalf of Najd Stud.
"This was a bit of a stand out today," said George. "The scene in Saudi Arabia is going from strength to strength and he looks like a horse who will suit the country's racing perfectly. Najd is a regular buyer here and a great client and hopefully this gelding will go onto be successful for the stud."
George added: "Najd has been buying for many years but the racing in Saudi is expanding. The farm has been very successful with Tattersalls graduates and, like everything, it is success driven – the more winners they buy from Tattersalls, they more they come back."
Tabaretta is a half-brother to the Prix Miesque (G3) winner Devant, and his dam Davantage (Galileo) is a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (G1) winner Blue Canari. It is the further family of the champion Mtoto.

"This horse has a good pedigree, he has a good physical, and he is fast – we like sprinters!" said Muammer. "We have no training plans as yet."
Changing Colours finished second at Pontefract last year over 6f and has twice come home on mid-division this year in 0-100 and a 0-90 7f handicaps at Newmarket.
He hails is from the extended family of the two-time French Classic winner Lope De Vega.

Lot 870:
Heavenly Wish is bought by racing presenter Sally Ann Grassick and in front of the ITV Racing cameras.
"She is for Carrisbrooke Stud, my sister Cathy picked her out but she could not be here today and left me with instructions," reported Grassick. "ITV Racing had had the idea of filming a horse going through the ring and being bought, and the two projects came together."
The filly, a daughter of Pivotal and out of a Hurricane Run half-sister to the Matron Stakes (G1) winner and Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) runner-up Chachamaidee (Footstepsinthesand), cost her new connections 23,000gns.
The once-raced filly, who is "unlikely" to remain in training, was sold by The Castlebridge Connections for owner-breeder Lady Bamford.
Watch ITV Racing later today to watch Grassick in bidding action!
