Lot 1284: Ebtihaaj (Night Of Thunder), from the Shadwell draft, is bought by Sam Sangster for 80,000gns. He is horse known to Sangster as the horse has been in training with Brian Meehan, and he is going back to Meehan's Manton yard.
"He is for existing owners of Brian's, we have liked the horse all along, Brian suggested the horse to them and they were keen to buy," said Sangster. "He is a Night Of Thunder, we have a little bit of an interesting angle for next year – Brian is hopefully going to shuttle a few horses over to France, we are going to take yard over there. This horse has the premiums, we bought four yearlings in France last week and we have got another four in the yard already, so we are going to send ten horses out there. We are just trying to piece together how it is all going to work."
The two-year-old colt, a son of the Listed placed mare Gold Sands (Cape Cross), has run once to date when ninth of 12 at Yarmouth in October. (10:37)
Lot 1267: "He has been bought for Mark Loughnane for a syndicate from Chester and they want to have a runner at the track next summer," said Jamie Lloyd. "I've had amazing luck buying from Brian in the past, he has been very good to us and when he puts us on to one we always listen.
"The plan is to put him away for the winter and get him ready for Chester next year. He is gelded, too, so that saves some money!"
Ciotog is a three-year-old gelding by Dandy Man. He has run three times, and has finished second the last twice – at Wolverhampton last time out and previously at Chester, the new connections can have some confidence that he handles the tight Cheshire track.
He has been given an initial rating of 75. (10:12)

Lot 1188: Stuart Williams's Diomed Stables sells Motorious (Muhaarar) for 220,000gns for Boomer Bloodstock,
"He's a horse that is going to California to trainer Philip D'Amato for Tony Fanticola, who was one of the owners of Obviously. He was purchased at this sale and we had a lot of success with," said Craig Rounsefell of Boomer Bloodstock.
"This horse reminded us of Obviously – he has a great turn of foot, he is lightly raced and he looks like he is going to really enjoy the firm Turf in California, he has all his conditions to race out there so hopefully he will be a high class miler for us."
Obviously (Choisir) was bought by Jamie Lloyd & Boomer Bloodstock for 130,000gns here in 2011. Trained by D'Amato, Obviously went on to win three Grade1s in the US, including the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. He won a further six Grade 2 and Grade 3 races, and was placed six times in graded stakes races, including in the Woodbine Mile (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Mile.
Motorious has won twice from seven starts, his wins coming on the All-Weather at Kempton. His has also finished second twice on Turf at Leicester and Beverley, both times the going was reported to be good to firm. He finished down the field the twice he encountered a slower surface. (21:14)
Lot 1186A: "I am really believe that he is the best value horse in the sale. And, on price, I think he is the best value horse I have bought for about 10 years!" enthused Johnny McKeever after spending 230,000gns on Youth Spirit, sold as a wildcard entry by Park House Stables.
"I am extremely excited about that... I have been trying to buy the horse all year," added McKeever. "There has been a lot of activity from Australia to buy this horse privately, for various reasons the sale did not quite happen.
"His level of form is outstanding, he is by Camelot, he is such a beautiful looking horse, he has absolutely everything going for him. I am surprised and delighted, thrilled, I am very satisfied that is my buy of the year."
Youth Spirit is BHA rated 110, won over 7f as a juvenile last July and won the 1m4f Chester Vase Stakes (G3) this May. He finished eighth in the Epsom Derby (G1), 20l behind Adayar, fourth in the Gordon Stakes (G3), third in the Great Voltigeur (G2) and last time out he was fifth in the St Leger (G1), 7l behind Hurricane Lane.
McKeever was buying for regular client Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, a second horse purchased for the Australian-based training team.
Another combination who will be delighted to see Youth Spirit heading to Australia, is the buying team of Australian trainer Matt Cumani, Bill Jackson-Stops and Sam Haggas – they bought Hanaady (Lot 1000), also due to travel to Australia.
Hanaady is a Night Of Thunder filly out of Harlequin, a half-sister to Rocana (Fastnet Rock), the dam of Youth Spirit. The pair of sisters are also half-siblings to the good sprinters Blaine and Bogart . (20:55)
RECORD! We have a new record turnover for the Autumn HIT Sale... the sale's previous best of 27,282,200gns, set in 2017, has been topped with a day's selling still to go. (20:43)
Lot 1171: "He looks a nice horse and seems to go on firm ground, he is going to Bahrain for Fazwi Nass, he looks as though he will suit the criteria," said Oliver St Lawrence after buying the Group 3 third-placed Classic Lord (Lord Of England).
The four-year-old gelding is out of the winning jumps mare Classic Diva (Sholokhov), has won four races from 11 starts, over trips from a mile to 1m6f. He was in training with Andrew Balding, owned by the Park House Partnership. (20:15)
Lot 1142: Fundamental, by Dark Angel and out of the Group 1 winner Integral (Dalakhani), bred by Cheveley Park Stud, is a 12th horse purchased at the sale by the Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock and Najd Stud. The team is the leading buyer at the sale with a spend of 2,491,000gns.
Fundamental has run almost exclusively over 7f and has won twice picking up over £60,000 in prize-money. He is BHA rated 103. (19:32)
Lot 1139: Pied Piper, the dual-winning three-year-old colt by New Approach, is sold by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of Clarehaven Stables. He makes 225,000gns and is bought by Joseph Logan / Andrew and Gemma Brown. Trainer Gordon Elliott and bloodstock agent Mouse O'Ryan were in the sales ring and bidding on their behalf.
"Pied Piper has been bought by Andrew and Gemma Brown, who have a string of horses with Gordon," said Irish-based agent Logan on the telephone.
"The horse will go juvenile hurdling this winter, and will run back on Flat next summer – and will be a dual purpose type. I saw some videos of him, but Gordon saw him at Tattersalls and really loved him. Pied Piper won well last time on softer ground and looks to have a good profile to go hurdling." (19:12)
Lot 1114: the Juddmonte Farms-consigned Boltaway, a three-year-old cilt by Dubawi and out of Proviso, a four-time Group 1 and Grade 1 winner, is bought by Najd Stud for a session-topping 400,000gns
Najd Stud is Prince Faisal, the son of King Khalid and grandson of Saudi ruler King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Representative Saad bin Mishraf said: "We tried to buy this horse privately, but that wasn't possible and so we waited for this sale. It's proved to be one of the toughest markets I have ever seen for horses in training.
"He's by Dubawi, whose offspring have succeeded in Saudi Arabia and out of a Dansili mare, and Dansilis have done well well in Saudi Arabia, so he had the right pedigree. He also had size and good feet for racing on dirt.
"He's not been over-raced and he vetted 100 per cent, which was one of the main reasons for trying to buy him.
"All the races in Saudi Arabia are on the up, with better prize money, sometimes increased by four or five times. There are races for locally-bred horses and imported horses, and while we don't have many imported horses the ones we have are very good." (19:02)
Lot 1113: Old Flame, the first lot sold at this year's Autumn HIT Sale from the Juddmonte Farms draft, is bought by the Sydney-based Snowden Racing / Will Johnson Bloodstock for 250,000gns. Jason Singh was responsible for bidding and took instructions over the telephone, buying for the father and son team of Peter and Paul Snowden.
Colum McCullagh, Snowden Racing's racing and bloodstock manager, took time out from morning track work (at 4.15am) to discuss the horse's purchase. Formerly trained by Ralph Beckett, the three-year-old colt has run four times, with three outings over 7f for two race wins. He is BHA rated 87.
"He will be on the first shipment from Europe to Australia," said McCullagh. "He looks to have the right sort of profile for Australia and is by Invincible Spirit, who has such a huge influence here through his son I Am Invincible.
"He should suit a lot of races here over distances from 6f to a mile, he is a real-sprinter miler type – the prize-money here in Australia for this type of horse is so good. He has not been bought for a particular client and we will look to syndicate him."
McCullagh added: "He came highly recommended by his trainer, who loved him every morning and evening. I have to give special mention to Will Johnson, who spent time in Newmarket as assistant to trainer Roger Varian. Will has put a lot of work into the catalogue and it is great to have someone with his knowledge of racing in the region.
"To have a horse from such an organisation is Juddmonte Farms speaks for itself – Old Flame has just two dams on the page and has a stallion's pedigree." (18:42)
Lot 1055: this year's Brocklesby Stakes, Listed Windsor Castle Stakes and Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy winner Chipotle sells for 210,000gns. He was bought by Najd Stud / Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock, underbidder was Charlie Gordon-Watson representing Qatari-based interests.
The colt by Havana Gold, bred by Theakston Stud, was bought as a yearling by trainer Eve Johnson-Houghton for 10,000gns at the Tattersalls Ascot Sale in September 2020.
Johnson-Houghton said: "I am a bit teary, because he has been amazing and for a 10 grand purchase to win the Brocklesby, win at Royal Ascot, at Redcar and then come here... And he is going to do a job for someone, he has grown again, he is tough, he is sound, he will get the 7f and I hope he does really well in Saudi, he has just been a great, great horse for us. I am thrilled with the price and good luck to the new owners."
Recalling the colt's yearling original purchase, Johnson-Houghton said: "I was a bit concerned last year with COVID that I was not going to have any horses, so I bought three yearlings – I bought him at the Tattersalls Ascot Sale, and Ant [Bromley] did a brilliant job. I set up the syndicate The Woodway 20 with the rules that we had to sell the horses at the end of their two-year-old careers. It is a hell of a result and I am just very proud of him."
When asked if she would have liked to have kept the horse, Johnson-Houghton replied: "Of course I would have, but it is really hard in England for that type of horse. If he isn't Group class, I am not saying he won't be Group class, but if he doesn't get to that as a three-year-old then you are hammered by the handicapper, it does make it so hard for them."
Chipotle was led up today, and frequently given reassuring pats while in the ring, by Nynke Schilder who has looked the colt throughout his time in training. "She does a lot of my travelling, and she is the luckiest – she always does the good ones!" smiled Johnson-Houghton.
Lockdown and COVID actually worked Johnson-Houghton's favour – a few the members in The Woodway 20 might not have been involved in the syndicate had it not been for the pandemic.
One of The Woodway 20 is Maurice Thomas, who has never been involved in a Flat horse before – as he says he is "a dyed in the wool point-to-point man".
But with point-to-pointing stopped for much of last winter, he swapped a number of his horses to run under Rules. With the gallop that he usually uses then swept away by heavy rain, his horses were using the all-weather at Woodway Stables.
"I was up watching the horses one day and three horses of Eve's went by and William [Reddy], Eve's head lad, said to me, 'You want to get involved in that syndicate!'
"I then saw the advert, and I thought if we win a few races with the three around the local tracks then we will be ok and that we'd have had a great time... we've really hit the jackpot here!"
Eve's sister-in-law Wendy Johnson-Houghton is also a member of the syndicate, but despite her family connections has not been involved in many of the horses trained at Woodway Stables. Again it was lockdown that led to her joining the syndicate.
"Gordon and I were involved in Tout Seul [trained by Eve's father to win the Dewhurst Stakes in 2002]," she said. "Due to lockdown we did not have holiday to go on, nothing to do, so that is why we joined, it really is a result of lockdown. What a horse he has been! He has taken us from the first day of the season to almost the last with Group 1 courses in the middle and Royal Ascot.
"I know how difficult it is to achieve, and to have spent just 10,000gns to have done it, is amazing," she added.
All the members have signed up to join the next Woodway 20... good luck to them, let's hope lightning strikes twice! (17:09)
Lot 1008: wikipedia writes that "Captain Matthew Flinders was an English navigator and cartographer who led the first inshore circumnavigation of the landmass that is now known as Australia. He is also credited as being the first person to utilise the name Australia to describe the entirety of that continent including Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania)."
Appropriately, the horse named after the adventurer is following in his namesake's footsteps – he has been bought from Ed Walker's yard by Stuart Boman for 230,000gns, and set to join the Warwick Farm-based stables of trainer Annabel Neasham.
Boman was accompanied at the sale today by Neasham's mother Patricia, who lives in Northamptonshire, and Annabel's godfather's wife, Margaret.
Boman reporting on the purchase of Matthew Flinders, said: "This is my second purchase for Annabel at this sale, the first one obviously very successful!
"It is going to be a hard act to follow, but we wanted to target what we felt could be one of the nicest horses for Australia.
"His ability is far better than what the form book shows. He is a horse who constantly travels best of all, in any field he is in. I spoke with Ed Walker and I think he has probably felt he has had a Group horse on his hands for a long time – he wanted him to win his big handicap but he never had his day.
"The handicapper then forced his hands by raising the horse's mark so high. He ran so well at Chester [July 10] leading into the Balmoral Handicap in October and put in another good run there.
"He is thoroughly consistent, runs to a very high Timeform rating all the time, always runs a 105, he is a strong travelling horse and should really suit Australia with the firm ground and there are a lot of races for him in his distance range."
Boman added: "I am delighted for Annabel, she is flying along, she has two runners in the Golden Eagle on Saturday, which is worth A$7.5 million race, things are healthy in Australia."
Of last year's purchase Boman smiled: "Zaaki has been phenomenal, it is fantastic. It is remarkable what one horse can do for people's lives and careers."
Zaaki, sold as Lot 706 at this sale last year and consigned by Sir Michael Stoute's Freemason Lodge Stables, was bought by Blandford Bloodstock and Annabel Neasham Racing for 150,000gns. The six-year-old son of Leroidesanimaux has since won two Group 1 races - the Underwood Stakes and the Doomben Cup – and a three Group 2s. (15:48)
Lot 1000: Hanaady (Night Of Thunder), a daughter of Harlequin, a half-sister to the good sprinters Blaine and Bogart, is heading to Australia and the Victoria-based yard of trainer Matt Cumani.
She cost 120,000gns and the docket lists the buyers as "M Cumani Racing / JS Bloodstock / Hurworth Bloodstock"
"Myself and Sam Haggas have done some work together and we put her to Matt," said Billy Jackson-Stops. "Her sire Night Of Thunder has been going really well down there, and he was pretty keen to we try a filly down. there. We thought we'd see if it works, there are options for her.
"Matt and I have had a bit of success along the way, and he is a trainer going places. She is good looking, will have some residual value and has run to a reasonable level, she will be sellable and has got the form and ticks a lot of boxes." (15:19)
Lot 989: Dan Astbury / More Turf Racing spend 68,000gns on Patient Dream, a gelding by Al Kazeem sold by Kimpton Down Stables.
"He is going to Oliver Greenall, and is for a group of lads a couple are already owners and a couple are new," said Astbury. "It is good to have them in the yard, and the plan is to go juvenile hurdling. He has got the perfect profile – he stays, goes on soft ground." (14:48)
Lot 964: Star Thoroughbreds / Chris Waller buy a first lot at the 2021 Autumn HIT Sale – the pair going to 50,000gns for Carbon, the juvenile son of Kodiac offered by trainer Roger Varian's Carlburg Stables.
The colt has run five times since the beginning of August and, after a first-time out sixth, has collected form figures of 3,2,1,3. His win came at Leicester over7f on good to firm in September off a rating of 79.
Carbon is out of the Galileo mare Mzyoon, a half-sister to Society Rock, winner of the Golden Jubilee Stakes (G1) and Haydock Park Sprint Cup (G1). (14:42)
Lot 952: "King Of Clubs is for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott," reported Johnny McKeever after spending 230,000gns on the son of Intello. "He is a lovely horse, Robbie Waterhouse liked the form, I liked the horse, Hughie Morrison recommended him.
"It is the same formula we have always used – find the horse we like, with the right form, with the right rating, and hope he or she adapts to Australia. We think this is a horse who looks like he will make a nice stayer in Australia."
McKeever identified a little more closely what that "right" rating is: "We like to try and buy between 95 and 110, but they are hard to come by and there are only a few in this sale. We are all sharing them around, I think!"
This is the fist purchase for the team at the sale this year, and McKeever explained that the strong market has halted the purchasing plans.
"They have been making more than we have been prepared to spend so we've had two blank days – hopefully we got another couple of follow through today."
And explaining a little more as to how the teams find the "right" horses, he said: "Rob Waterhouse is a very clever man on form, he has been an integral part of all the good horses we have bought. He is a good spotting horses that he thinks, on form, will translate to Australia – that takes a bit of pressure off me as all I have to do is look at the horse and decide if physically he is the right sort of horse.
"We have identified some very good horses – Knights Order, who won the Queensland Derby this year, came out of this sale. We have a good record of spotting the ones to suit us."
King Of Clubs (Intello) has won two races from eight starts – his maiden in May over a mile and half a furlong at Nottingham and a handicap at Sandown over 1m2f off a mark of 82. He is now BAH rated 93, and most of his form has been produced on good and good to firm ground. His last start came when seventh of 12 in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap over 1m2f at Newbury.
Bred by Meon Valley Stud, and not sold as a yearling for 19,000gns, he is from the stud's leading family of Bella Colora, the dam of the champion older horse Stagecraft, and the pedigree of the recent good performers including Telecaster and Shirocco Star, both also trained by Morrison. (13:49)
Lot 923: Without Envy, the once-raced and once-placed son of Lope De Vega, is bought by Hubie De Burgh for 85,000gns.
Trained by Andrew Balding, the three-year-old finished a good second at Ascot on his sole racecourse start at the beginning of October.
"He is for John Galvin and Fortuna Syndicates, which is based in New Zealand – they had the good filly Melody Belle. We bought one here together a couple of years ago and he won four races for them, so they were very happy with that and wanted to come back and find another.
"This a big baby of a horse, he did not run at two and he has put in one very good run. He is very much a horse for next year."
De Burgh added: "We bought earlier for Sydney-based trainer Mark Newman [Lot 894, Taraashoq], and it is his first European purchase." (12:55)
Lot 895: Qatar-based trainer Ibrahim Saeed Al-Malki goes to 120,000gns for Tasfeeq, sold out of the Day 3 Shadwell draft.
Trained by Marcus Tregoning, the son of Oasis Dream is a three-time winner from nine races and is currently on a career high BHA mark of 89.
His last two race wins came in August and September at Newmarket and Bath over a mile on good to firm and firm ground.
The February-born colt was bred by Floors Farming & The Duke Of Devonshire and is out of Blinking, a full-sister to Viva Pataca (Marju), the two-time champion older horse in Hong Kong. (11:57)
Lot 863: Beechdown Farm Stables (C. Cox) sells Incumbent to Ahmad Alabdullatif for 50,000gns.
The son of Ulysses has been placed twice from six starts, three runs over 7f and three over a mile. He is rated 78.
The first-crop son of Galileo has produced 13 winners to date, headed by the winning Piz Badile, who has also finished second in the Eyrefield Stakes (G3). (11:31)
Lot 848: Jassim Ghazali, buying online, purchases a fourth horse this week going to 62,000gns for Petit Larme (Zarak).
The two-year-old filly, previously in-training with Ed Walker, was bred by Kildaragh Stud and was a vendor buy-in as a yearling.
Owned in training by Mrs A G Kavanagh & Partner 1, the filly has run twice, finishing third last time in a 7f novice at Chelmsford on October 14.
She is a half-sister to seven winners, including Rosay (Raven's Pass), a Listed winner and Group 2 placed. She is from the family of the Grade 1 winner and multiple graded and group race winner and performer Mauralakana (Muhtathir), and Jim And Tonic, winner of the Hong Kong Cup (G1) and also multiple group race winner and placed. (11:02)
Lot 832: De Vega's Warrior has been bought with a dual purpose career in mind – the son of Lope De Vega is joining trainer Mick Appleby from Joseph O'Brien.
"He will go juvenile hurdling," said Appleby, who was sat and bidding from the gods with the horse's new owner Jeremy Young. The pair had to go 80,000gns to buy the colt from the Baroda Stud-consigned draft.
"He will be gelded when we get him back and turned away for the winter. He have a few runs on the Turf next summer and then go hurdling. I have a handful of horses who might run in bumpers and then do the same, " added the Rutland-based predominantly Flat trainer.
The two-year-old has run four times, all his starts coming over 7f, and though yet to win, he has shown form when second on heavy ground at Limerick. He has a rating of 85. (10:17)
Lot 822: Stroud Coleman Bloodstock / Neil King go to 55,000gns for the Pride Of Dubai gelding Lifetime Legend sold by Andy Oliver's Stragane House Stables.
The three-year-old has yet to win in 11 starts, but has placed form over 1m2f and is rated 74. (10:07)

Record-breaking turnover !
Today's sale has created a new record turnover for a session at the Autumn HIT Sale. At the time of writing, with a handful of lots left to go through the ring, today's aggregate is 10,981,000gns (20:57)
Lot 778: Dancing King, sold by Mark Johnston's Kingsley Park for syndicate Kingsley Park 16, is bought by Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock for 380,000gns.
The gelding is by Free Eagle, out of the Big Shuffle mare Agnetha and was bred by Springbank Way Stud. Johnston Racing bought him as a yearling for 18,000gns at the October Book 3 Sale in 2019.
"He is going abroad for an an established client of Blandford," said Boman. "He is a lovely horse, a last time Group 3 winner [of the 1m6f March Stakes], and he is an outstanding horse to look at, I have seen him three times.
"I have to congratulate Mark Johnson for finding a horse of his quality as a yearling as cheaply as he did. The horse is called Dancing King and he has danced every dance; he showed up every time and he always puts it in."
The three-year-old ran three times as a juvenile, and has run eight times this year. He started his 2021 campaign at the beginning of March on a mark of 73 and he is now rated 103. He won his first four starts this year over distances from 1m4f to 1m6f before picking up his Group race success at the late August Goodwood meeting.
"Mark Johnston has presented this horse in immaculate condition. The horse has not run for over five weeks, you can see that they have prepared him for this sale and brought him here in fantastic condition," added Boman. (20:49)
Lot 738: the Group 3 winner Grocer Jack becomes the 2021 Autumn HIT sale's new top lot, selling for 700,000gns to Najd Stud and Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock.
An active Michael Donohoe was the underbidder – the bidding having narrowed to a two-way battle between the two teams through from the 400,000gns zone.
"He is for the Saudi Cup, and with that rating he will definitely be accepted for the race," explained Najd Stud's representative Saad bin Mishraf. "Hopefully, he will act on the Dirt, we hoped we might get him for 400,000gns – it was tough competition and I think it was from people with the same target!
"The prize-money fund at the Saudi Cup is driving up the market for the right horses. And it is not just the Saudi Cup, there are other valuable races on that card, too – Saudi is becoming very important on the international racing scene."
A realistic Mishraf added: "No matter what you spend, sometimes it works, sometimes it won't work. You can spend three million on a yearling and it won't break its maiden, and that is the same everywhere."
Grocer Jack, winner of the Premio Ambrosiano (G3) and placed eight times including when second in Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (G1), was consigned by Ronald Rauscher, who has been busy himself over the last two days buying with Australian Thoroughbreds.
"That was, by a long margin, more than I expected, I thought he might make between 300,000gns and 500,000gns," reasoned Rauscher. "But obviously we had a situation of two people going logger heads, and that makes a big difference."
Rauscher recalled the background to Grocer Jack.
"I bought the mare Good Donna for Dr Christoph Berglar, in-foal to Solider Hollow," he said. "That foal became a stakes winner and then we followed up with Jack. The mare has done nothing wrong. She is by Doyen, but he was underrated – he had a very good average on ratings, especially for his fillies.
"Grocer Jack has not put a foot wrong for us, and I hope that continues for his new connections. He is a very fluent mover, and I think he prefers fast ground."
Of the reasoning behind the sale, Rauscher said: "Being in Germany, prize-money is fairly low, and ground-wise you are not getting that faster going we think he needs. We have travelled to Italy, but still in most cases we did not get the ideal ground for him. We did even consider setting him up in a satellite yard in California, but it was not really tenable, and in the end the time was right to being him here.
"Coming here to this sale was, in my book, the best course of action, as regards selling. If you have a four-year-old, you will find that the right people and bidders will be here."
Rauscher's parting comments, as he left the sale ring area in order to ensure his charge got safely back to his stable: "He has been trained by Waldemar Hickst, who has a fabulous job in Cologne and he has really looked after him. He delivered him here in top condition – the horse is a credit to him and his team." (19:18)
Lot 721: bidding for Makram (Make Believe) developed into a two-way battle between agents Stuart Boman and Barry Lynch, both were standing on the left of the rostrum and both on the phone. Bidding went up in 5,000gns increments, with eventually Lynch shaking his head when offered a bid of 345,000gns, leaving Boman successful at 340,000gns.
The gelding was consigned by Barton Sales for trainer Roger Charlton's Beckhampton House Stables.
"He is a lovely horse, I paid a lot for him, but from an Australian's perspective it is the right profile of a horse," said Boman. "He has been purchased for an existing client.
"He has done everything – he has won all distance ranges, won on all goings, he is very progressive, he has been beautifully handled by Roger Charlton and his team. He is a very muscular horse and he came here after as a last start winner of a good handicap winner at Newbury. He looks as though he could step into group company next year in England."
Boman continued: "I have a real preference for buying the rating, get the high rated ones, he is Timeform 108 rated and looks like he is going to be better than that.
"I don't think there are any other regions who would value a horse such as this in a similar vein, but he looks the perfect Caulfield Cup type, and maybe, hopefully, a Melbourne Cup type, too. They are big statements to make, he is only currently a handicapper, but he fits the profile and he looks like he is going to keep on improving."
Of buying from Charlton, Boman said: "Roger Charlton is a trainer we regularly try and buy from – we bought Without Revenge [Lot 719] earlier today for Ontrack Thoroughbreds. Roger is a very well respected trainer and his horses keep developing and going forward, which is very important."
And of the continuing demand in t he southern hemisphere for middle-distance European horses, Boman said: "Trainer Chris Waller made this very popular [for Australians] – ten years ago he came up and bought a lot of horses, and was very successful and the results keep on coming." (19:02)
Lot 680: My Frankel is sold by Freemason Lodge Stables to the Saudi Arabian-based Najd Stable for 310,000gns.
Representative Saad Bin Mishraf, said: "He is for Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin A/Aziz, the leading stable. This horse is by Frankel so that is very good, we like his dam side too. Hopefully, he will suit our racing in Saudi Arabia very well. He might be one for the King's Cup. He will ship straight away now."
He will be trained by Saud Saad.
My Frankel is rated 95, and is the winner of three races from 11 starts. He has won twice on the All-Weather at Kempton over 1m4f, and once at Leicester on the good to firm over 1m2f. His previous owner was Saeed Suhail. (17:34)
Lot 664: the regular Tattersalls Autumn HIT visitor and purchaser California-based Tim Cohen of Red Baron's Barn did not make it to Park Paddocks in 2019, but he has come back with force today spending 300,000gns on the two-year-old Maglev, sold by William Haggas's Somerville Lodge Stables.
Cohen is at Newmarket with his son Cole, and was sat alongside his regular advisor Alastair Donald, who was with Joe Miller. Cohen signed under the regular purchasing banner of Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal.
It is the second-most expensive purchase by Cohen at Tattersalls – he previously went to 320,000gns for Sash sold by Juddmonte Farms at this sale in 2019.
Cohen purchased the subsequent Grade 1 winner River Boyne at this sale in 2017 for 70,000gns – the son of Dandy Man has since returned to Ireland on stallion duties at Tara Stud.
"Towards the end of the year there are a couple of stakes races in California, but it is the three-year-old year that we are looking forward to< reported Cohen of his purchase today. "His form is excellent, he vetted well, I thought one of the better two-year-olds in this sale, Alastair and Joe were very confident and we kept going.
"I think he is the first by Galileo Gold to go out to the US, and the most expensive!" he exclaimed.
"We've had good success with the horses we have taken back from here, we look for horses who can handle firm ground, that is what we are keen on."
Maglev is by first-season sire Galileo Gold (Paco Boy) and is rated 102. He has won once over 6f at Yarmouth and finished fifth last time out in the Mill Reef Stakes (G2). (17:18)
Lot 663: Wink Of An Eye, by Dubawi and out of Momentary (Nayef), is another purchase today by Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland. The agent had to go to 230,000gns for the three-year-old gelding, owned and bred by The Queen, trained by William Haggas.
"The Dubawis seem to improve a few pounds for training in the sunny climate. He will go on any surface. He is a very good looking horse, and he fitted the bill. He has come from a very good yard that you can alway be pleased to buy from and we are very happy to buy one from The Queen," said the agent.
"The market has the same all the way through this season, it has been a strong, and you need to pay for the good ones," added Donohoe
Wink Of An Eye has run 11 times, won four times in succession this summer between June 10 and July 30. He has collected £35,300 in earnings. His wins have come on good to firm and good to soft and have been over 1m2f. He is now BHA rated 91. (17:16)
Lot 659 and Lot 662: Titian (Iffraaj) and Kolisi (Harzand) finished first and second on October 22 over 1m2f at Doncaster. Both horses have been in training with William Haggas, and the two horses are set to continue their association as both are bought by agent Tom Malone and the pair are both heading to the West Country-based NH trainer David Pipe.
Titain cost 155,000gns, while Kolisi was a 55,000gns purchase.
"Both horses have been bought for owner William Frewen, he had Lough Derg with David," reported Malone. "he called me and said that he wanted to get involved.
"Both horses came highly recommended by William Haggas, particularly Titian, hopefully they both have the aptitude to go jumping. Both are gelded already, it is already nice to see them gelded, some one else has paid for the process and it is a bonus."
Malone added: "I think William rated the race at Doncaster highly enough that he wanted to make sure he had both the winner and the runner-up!" (17:15)
Lot 640: Australian-based trainer Trent Busuttin, bidding via the internet, goes to 170,000gns for Bonneval, sold by Pegasus Stables (J. Fanshawe).
The four-year-old gelding by Siyouni was bred by Fittocks Stud & Arrow Farm & Stud. Fanshawe has trained him to three race wins from nine starts, winning just shy of £60,000.
Rated 90, and now on a career-high mark having started his handicapping campaign on a mark of 76, the gelding has only once finished outside of the first three, and that was on his race debut.
Busuttin trains in Cranbourne, Victoria and this is his first signed-for purchase at Tattersalls. (16:43)
Lot 630: Amir Kabir is bought by Aidan O'Ryan / Gordon Elliott for 135,000gns. The gelding is by Mukhadram and is out of the New Approach mare Victory Garden. He was sold by Barton Sales for trainer Roger Charlton's Beckhampton House Stables.
He has won over distances from a mile to 1m6f and on ground from soft to good to firm, as well as on the All-Weather. A gelded four-year-old, he won last time out and has risen to a BHA rating of 89.
Bred by Genesis Green Stud Ltd, under the gelding's second dam is the hurdler and chaser Got Trumped. (16:15)
Lot 624: the winning two-year-old Ikhtiraaq becomes the most expensive horse sold out of the Shadwell dispersal so far – the Invincible Spirit homebred two-year-old colt fetches 220,000gns bought by RPG Bloodstock on behalf of client Mr Robert Ng, owner of the Group 1 winner Romanised.
"Ikhtiraaq will stay in Europe," reported Rupert Pritchard-Gordon. "We have had a good look at the horses of Shadwell and Mr Ng was keen to have go on one or two of them, particularly the two-year-olds. So we just liked the profile of this horse, we thought he ran well first time out, he is still learning on the job and he beat a couple of nice horses the other day. With a bit of luck there will be more from him next year."
Of the individual, Pritchard-Gordon added: "He is a really nice mover, he looks like he is going to grow a far bit more, he is still quite up behind, hopefully with another winter on his back he will grow into a nice three-year-old. There is always a chance with one with a pedigree like that. He has done nothing wrong, so with a little bit of luck if he keeps improving he is a horse to look forward to next year."
Immediate training plans are still to be confirmed, and Pritchard-Gordon said that relocating the horse to Hong Kong might be an option further down the line.
"You can never guarantee when you come to a public auction like this that you could get them into Hong Kong, it is big process getting them into Hong Kong, but it might be something we can keep in mind later on, if everything goes right.
"He will stay here for the moment, and then he needs to tick all the boxes. We were pleased with his vetting here, and we will see how next year's campaign goes and then consider Hong Kong, or Singapore, Mr Ng has horses there as well."
Of the opportunities evolving from the Shadwell dispersal, Pritchard-Gordon said: "I was at my last bid, the market is strong, it is just so rare – how many times in the past could you buy a two-year-old-winning Sheikh Hamdan horse? There are lot of people for whom this is what it is all about – dreaming and hoping that one of these horses, whether it is this fella or another one, will develop into a smart three-year-old. You always have got a chance when you are buying from these farms.
"As I said to Mr Ng, in 40 years it has never happened, no one has been able to buy a decent winning two-year-old of Sheikh Hamdan's. So we are having a go.
"Mr Ng was very interested in the dispersal. He had been looking at another horse owned Sheikh Hamdan's who ran recently at Ascot, and so we just talked about the whole situation and he was very keen to follow through the horses from the dispersal."
Ikhtiraaq hails from three generations of top-class Shadwell breeding – his third dam Wasnah (Nijinsky) was initially bought from breeder Nelson Bunker Hunt in 1986.
Trained by John Dunlop, she finished second in the Pretty Polly Stakes (L). She became the dam of six winners from nine runners, headlined by Bahri, the European champion three-year-old miler of 1995, and Bahhare, winner of the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and third placed in the Champion Stakes (G1). (16:05)
Lot 577: Hannibal Barca, fourth placed in the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes (G1) last weekend for trainer Brian Meehan on just his third career start, sells for 500,000gns. The son of Zoffany is bought by BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe.
"The horse looks very impressive, his maiden victory was very impressive and I thought it was a superb run in that ground at the weekend," said the agent. "I don't think he may have handled it all that well, but he was gutsy and it was his determination that got him through it.
"He is still quite green, and he is a lovely big scopey horse, 16.1hh, with a lot of scope to him, we think he is very progressive."
Of the colt's new connections, Donohoe said: "He has been bought for an existing client who has a couple of horses in England, Ireland France, and he may stay in training here. We are not sure what the plans are with him, the first thing was to get him bought and we will make the plan after. He could obviously be a horse for the Classics next year, he could have the speed for a mile but I think in time he could stay 1m4f.
"We are very happy to get him, he is very clean, he has a lovely attitude and temperament, he did not turn a hair there the couple of times we saw him or in the pre-parade ring. He is rated 111, by next May or June today's price could be good value."
The colt was bred by Brittas House Stud out of the Listed-winning Galileo mare Innocent Air. He was sold by the executors of Brittas House Stud as a foal, sadly Peter Magnier has passed, bought by Castlehyde for €16,000 and then purchased last September as a yearling by Sam Sangster Bloodstock for £55,000.
He has run this year's three races in Sam Sangster's blue and green colours, and Sangster was at Park Paddocks to watch the horse sell. He explained his feelings as he watched the colt's market value increase nearly ten fold.
"I am still buzzing, it was emotional really," he said. "Brian and I buy a lot of horses together on spec and we put them in the shop window, he was one of them. We loved him as a yearling, but with the year of COVID we struggled to get people to the yard and he was one of the horses we did not get sold.
"We have a lot of confidence in the horses we buy, so we raced him; full credit to Brian who believed in the horse to take him to the Doncaster race, Brian targeted the race for him. He has such a bright future, we are obviously gutted to see him go but it was good business all round."
As to what drew him to buy the horse last year, he said: "As a yearling he was exactly what he was in the ring there today – a gorgeous, free-moving horse. He is a Zoffany out of a Galileo mare, it is a beautiful proven cross.
"When we bought him I thought we'd bought him every well. Did I believe he'd go and make half a million at Tattersalls? No!"
Sangster also reported that the colt had shown his ability on the Manton gallops right from the get-go.
"All the lads in the yard loved him, even my nephew, Ollie Sangster who rode out early on, he rang me and said; This is real, real nice horse Sam'.
"But I am delighted for Brian and everyone in the yard. Brian has done it many times before – he has the confidence in his horses and runs them in big races, it just shows you have to back your trainer."
Was he not tempted to keep the horse himself and enjoy aiming for those big race targets next year?
"There was temptation to a level – and the level was in the sale ring!' he laughed. "But we knew we were on to something here, he had seven vets from Australia from all over and you come here because you know you are going to get the best bidders.
"Michael [Donohoe] rang me this morning and asked what I thought, and I told him that I could not recommend this horse more – he has got such a lovely temperament, a lovely stride and I think he is going to be a serious horse for next year."
Sangster has already reinvested in yearlings and is looking forward to marketing them this winter.
"We have bought 17 yearlings, and I run a syndicate called Manton Thoroughbreds and we buy six colts for it every year. We have attended a few more sales this year, hopefully now people can come down to the yard and we can have a few open days and we have a bit of marketing material of the back of him too!
"Brain and I have been working together for seven years – we have been buying these horses and it shows that we have the confidence in the horses that we buy to race them." (15:02)
Lot 574: Glentaneous is bought by Australian Bloodstock / Ronald Rauscher from Manton Lodge Stables for 160,000gns.
"I liked pretty much everything about this horse!" laughed Ronald Rauscher after his purchase of the colt by Gleneagles. "You need to when you are spending that sort of money!
The gelding has won over a mile and 1m2f and is rated 94. (15:00)
Lot 527: Alrehb, the War Front half-brother to Muhaarar, the European champion three-year-old sprinter of 2015, makes 120,000gns. The four-year-old gelding has run twice, winning since the catalogue was published, successful over a mile at Lingfield for trainer Charles Hills and owner breeder Shadwell Estate Company at the end of September.
"He won very well then, he has needed time and is from a family who improve with age," said his future trainer and purchaser Kevin Philippart de Foy. "He is an exciting prospect and joins the team for this year. We will give him some time and work out a programme for him. I think he will keep on improving, he has a great pedigree."
His dam Tahir (Linamix) has produced seven winners from eight runners, two black-type winners, including Muhaarar, and two black-type performers. (12:57)
Lot 519: from the Shadwell draft, Ramadhaan, a two-year-old chestnut filly by Ribchester, sells for 65,000gns bought by Meah / Lloyd Bloodstock.
The homebred filly has run since the catalogue was published, finishing third and fourth at Haydock and Chelmsford over 6f and 7f.
She is a half-sister to the 100-rated Raeedb (Raven's Pass), a winner in August at Chelmsford over 5f.
Ribchester is the sire of 14 winners to date, including the 108-rated Flaming Rib, winner of the Listed Doncaster Stakes last weekend. (12:34)
Lot 465: Persuasion is heading from Charles Hills Lambourn-based yard to David Barrons in North Yorkshire, Barrons's daughter Nicola in Newmarket to secure the purchase of the son of Acclamation at 75,000gns.
"He has shown a good level of form, but the big thing here for us was the old boy Hitchens in the pedigree under the second dam – he is a son of Acclamation as is this horse," explained Barrons.
She then admitted: "It was a bit of a heart strings moment! He has shown good form, he is very similar to Hitchens when we bought him, and it all came together. He is for owner Laurence [O'Kane] who owned Hitchens."
Of immediate plans for the four-year-old colt, who finished second in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersalls Stakes as a two-year-old and has run 11 times, Barrons outlined: "I think almost certainly he will be a gelding by the end of the week!"
Hitchens ran 74 times, 64 of those starts came for the Barrons yard for whom he won nine times (11 wins in total). He won three 6f Group 3 races, picked up over £690,000 in prize-money and ran until he was a nine-year-old. (11:24)
Lot 444: "He has been bought for a new client, and he is going to trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy," said agent Alex Elliott after going to 140,000gns for the once-raced, once-placed son of Havana Gold, named Elsals and from today's first Shadwell draft. Elliott signed on behalf on KPF Racing.
"My man is very strong on his stats, and Kevin's stats have come out pretty good, he has had an amazing first year.
Elliott added: "The only way is up for this horse, he has had one start for Richard Hannon. These Shadwell horse are coming in at a premium, we actually valued him a little less, but to try and buy is tough – when you are up against the likes of Gallic Bloodstock, who are very sharp fellas, you know you are on the right horses.
"I think you are better off paying a little more for a horse you really want. He will be put away now for this year, hopefully he can come out win his maiden and go on from there, the sky really is the limit for this horse, it is quite exciting.
"This is the first venture for my client with Kevin, it is good to support young trainers who are doing well."
Elsals, trained until now by Richard Hannon, finished third on his first career start at the beginning of this month over 7f at York. (10:29)
