Craven Sale 2022
Chairman’s Statement: At the conclusion of the 2022 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“The fact that the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up has produced the winners of both of this week's premier Classic trials, Cachet and the unbeaten champion Native Trail, is a powerful endorsement of our premier Breeze Up Sale and the competition for the two-year-olds over the past two evenings has reflected the sale’s reputation for consistently delivering two-year-olds of the very highest calibre.
“The array of lucrative Tattersalls bonuses on offer for all Craven Breeze Up purchases continues to attract owners and trainers in all sectors of the market and the domestic buyers have faced stiff opposition from a diverse crowd of overseas buyers, all of whom have contributed to a Craven Breeze Up Sale, which has posted gains in the key metrics of average, median and turnover, albeit with a clearance rate which has not matched last year’s record level.
"In addition to the strong overseas contingent from America, Bahrain, Dubai, France, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, we have had live internet bidders registered from Hong Kong and Japan and the global profile of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up continues to rise.
“As ever there have been some outstanding pinhooking triumphs, all of which reflect the professionalism of the consignors whose support of the Craven Breeze Up is key to its success. As an unbeaten European champion, Native Trail may be a hard act to follow, but we look forward to rewarding even more owners with lucrative £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonuses and hopefully to another winner of either of the substantial Royal Ascot and Group 1 bonuses.
"In the meantime there are plenty more quality two-year-olds on offer at the forthcoming Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale and we look forward to sustaining the momentum from a successful Craven Breeze Up.” (10:30)

Lot 145: the 2022 Craven Sale's leading buyer Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock goes to 300,000gns for this son of leading sire Kingman.
Ross Doyle said: "He is a real good physical for that type of stallion, very straightforward, a good mover, he breezed well and is probably a 7f-miler type of horse. He has a good pedigree. He have been lucky buying off Sarah and Mick from Longways, we bought Witch Hunter last year."
Doyle signed in association with Omni Horse, and Doyle explained: "It is a new syndicate, Kia [Joorabchian] from Amo Racing is involved, hopefully it will be exciting. I am not sure of training plans for this horse."
The father and son buying team (two bought with Omni Horse) is the Craven Sale 2022 leading buyer having bought seven horses for a spend of 1,330,000gns, an average price of 190,000gns.
Doyle said: "We were not planning on buying so many. We are surprised and very happy, I did not think we'd buy that sort of number, it has worked out well. We are very lucky that we have some very good clients supporting us."
It is the busiest the Doyles have been at this sale for a number of years. (20:34)
Lot 125: the War Front filly offered by Grove Stud is bought by Satish Seemar for 220,000gns, a fourth purchase this week by the Dubai-based trainer.
The filly was purchased as a yearling by Grove for $170,000 last year and she is out of the Grade 1 winner Dancing Rags (Union Rags), who is a daughter of the Grade 3-placed Home Court (Storm Cat) and a grand-daughter of Jewel Princess, a champion older mare in the US in 1996, the winner of 13 races, including four Grade 1s. (19:37)
Lot 121: the daughter of Zoustar is bought by racehorse owner and breeder Bill Gredley, who is based at near-at-hand Stetchworth House Stud. The filly, who is out of the Listed-placed Oasis Dream mare Cordial, cost her new owner 270,000gns. The purchase was signed under the banner of Stetchworth And Middle Park Studs.
"I was underbidder on Lot 116 [Dark Angel ex Clem Fandango], but I like this filly, a lot of people liked her, she was a lot of money but if you want something good you have to pay a lot of money," said Gredley.
"We have the stud, so we will race her and if she gets to the track and wins," he added when asked if the filly will be a breeding prospect further down the line.
"I don't often buy at breezes, but we took a look at her and she has a nice personality, I like nice people with nice personalities! I don't know yet who will train her, I will have a chat with my son [Tim], he is showjumping in Spain, jumping horses and buying horses.
"It is really exciting, and I can name her!"
She was bought as a yearling for 70,000gns by MC Bloodstock from Galloway Stud at the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale. She is a half-sister to two winners, and is another from a Juddmonte-developed pedigree – her granddam is Mirabilis, the dam of Monarchs Glen and a half-sister to the two-time French Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado.
She was sold today by Jim McCartan's Gaybrook Lodge Stud. (19:24)
Lot 114: is going to race in Saudi Arabia having been bought by Najd Stud, the farm's representative Saud Al Qahtani sat with bloodstock agent Peter Doyle.
"He is a lovely horse, a very nice horse, a very sound horse, Stuart Boman was bidding on him for Hong Kong and he would have had to pass everything for them to be interested," said Doyle. "He is an American-bred and American horses suit the surface out there. We were not sure what to expect as regards price in the ring."
It is the first time the stud has bought at a breeze-up sale in Britain.
Al Qahtani explained: "The Craven Sale is a good sale and it has produced the best three-year-old and champion in Native Trail, that encouraged us to come over. This horse will be aimed for the Saudi Derby."
By American Pharoah, bought as a yearling by Mags O'Toole for $57,000, the February-born colt was sold today by Lynn Lodge Stud. He hails from the Juddmonte pedigree of Timepiece and Passage Of Time being out of the young Oasis Dream mare Circulation, a half-sister to the champion older horse and multiple Group 1 winner Twice Over. (19:09)
Lot 96: one of the session's expected highlights lived up to her star billing, this filly by Kodiac offered by Tally-Ho Stud, makes 470,000gns. Bids came in from Jake Warren, Richard Brown, David Redvers, but it was trainer Michael O'Callaghan who emerged successful.
"I have bought a lot of good horses off Tally-Ho – Blue de Vega, Twilight Jet, Now Or Never to name just a few," said O'Callaghan. "She is a lovely filly, she did a very fast breeze, she is a lovely physical with a great pedigree. She ticks all the boxes and hopefully she will make up into a Royal Ascot filly. She looks fast and Royal Ascot will be the hope. She has been bought for Amo Racing, who are new to the yard this year."
Bred by Tally-Ho Stud, the filly is out of the Listed-placed Fasliyev mare Yajala, dam of the Listed-winning, Group 3-placed Evil Spell and the Jersey Stakes G3) runner-up Society Power. It is the extended family of the sprinter Mind Games.
Leading consignor Tally-Ho Stud has one lot left to sell and so far has sold seven lots for an average price of 246,000gns and an aggregate price of 1,722,000gns. (18:19)
Lot 84: the colt by Sioux Nation, from Mocklershill Stud, sells today for 380,000gns. He was bought by Anthony Stroud, who was standing at the top of the stairs.
Underbidder was Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, while Peter Doyle sat with the representatives from Najd Stud was also involved.
"He is a very nice horse, he will stay in England and is for KHK Racing, Bahrain," said Stroud. "He moved very well, did a good breeze is from a good consignor; he ticked the boxes. He is the horse we wanted to get to tonight. Richard Brown is a very good judge and he was the underbidder.
"He looks a real two-year-old and Sioux Nation has had a winner."
He was bred by Pier House Stud and is a half-brother to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Twilight Gleaming. The daughter of National Defense finished second in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) last year, and the Wesley Ward-trained filly is due to travel over for this year's Royal Ascot having finished second at the weekend in the Palisades Stakes (L) at Keeneland. (18:02)
Craven Sale graduate wins the Group 3 Craven Stakes, Native Trail extending his unbeaten record to five in the mile Craven Stakes (G3).
The Oasis Dream colt, last year's champion juvenile, was sold at the Craven Sale by Norman Williamson's Oak Tree Farm, bought by Godolphin for 210,000gns. He won last year's National Stakes (G1) and Dewhurst Stakes 9G1).
It was a full house at the Craven meeting for Craven Sale graduates in the three-year-old feature events – yesterday's Group 3 7f Nell Gwyn Stakes was won by Craven Sale graduate Cachet. (15:49)
Today's sale starts at 5.30pm after the conclusion of racing at Newmarket (15:05)

Lot 81A: the wildcard entry and the last in tonight fetches 400,000gns, bought by Peter & Ross Doyle. By Zoustar, she is out of Saccharose (Exceed And Excel) the winner of one race at three in France. The two-year-old filly was sold by Aguiar Bloodstock.
"She is outstanding, I have not seen a filly like that for a long time," said Ross Doyle. "She is an unbelievable individual, she breezed well, she comes from a very good home and came highly recommended. She is for a new client."
Explaining why this filly was such a stand-out, Doyle said: "She is just a bit different, you don't see many like that and physically she stands up as a very good specimen. She has a lovely big ear, an honest head, everything is in the right place and she takes everything very easy."
Of Zoustar, whose first northern-hemisphere crop are two-year-olds of this year, he said: "We have one of two at Richard's that he likes, and he is obviously a sire sensation Down Under. "
Underbidder was Tweenhills Stud's David Redvers, who has stood the son of Northern Meteor in his four seasons at stud in Britain.
The filly was bought by Midland Equine last August for €75,000 from Ecurie des Monceaux. (20:44)
Lot 65: the Mehmas half-sister to last year's Phoenix Stakes (G1) winner Ebro River (Galileo Gold) is bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for 300,000gns.
"Mehmas again!" smiled Ross Doyle. "He has been very good to a lot of people, including ourselves and the Hannons – we bought him as a breeze-up horse here. He has done magnificently well at Tally-Ho as a stallion – we are huge fans and Richard Hannon is a massive fan!"
Of the filly, he said: "She looks like she would do what it says on the tin, hopefully, she is a real two-year-old and has a very good pedigree. She comes from one of the best homes in the game, there are a huge amount of positives. There is a lot of speed in the pedigree with Slade Power there, too, hopefully she has got a lot going for her.
"She is for an existing client, the long term the plan is to breed from her if she can go as quick as she looks! Hopefully she can get some black-type on the way."
Dam Soft Power won at three and is a half-sister to the dam of the champion older sprinter Slade Power. Ebro River, a 75,000gns October Book 2 yearling, is due to run tomorrow in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes.
Mehmas cost Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock 170,000gns at the 2016 Craven Breeze Up Sale, bought from Horse Park Stud. (20:19)
Lot 54: the filly from the first-crop of Tasleet, consigned by Aguiar Bloodstock Ltd, is bought by Kerri Radcliffe / OMNI Horse for 200,000gns.
She was a 75,000gns Tattersalls Somerville Sale yearling purchase and is a half-sister to A Momentofmadness (Elnadim), placed third in the Prix du Gros-Chene (G3).
Dam Royal Blush own at two, while her second dam Appluad (Rahy) won twice at two her successes including the Cheery Hinton Stakes (G3). (20:15)
Lot 47: Johnny Collins of Brown Island Stables has headed twice to Germany on yearling purchasing missions.
"The last time I was there I bought three horses, including one called Khan, he went onto win the Preis von Europa (G1)," said Collins. "It is going to be hard to beat that, though Khan didn't make me any money!"
Last autumn he returned from Europe with this colt by Oasis Dream whom he sold today for 310,000gns to Godolphin having paid just €58,000.
Collins said: "He was a beautiful yearling with a great walk, he was of those I was surprised. that I got to buy him to be honest. He has been a lovely horse all the way through."
"He has shown us a lot of speed, but if you go through his pedigree he is probably bred to get a mile or a mile plus, I'll let Charlie Appleby be the judge of that!"
The colt's dam Queimada (Dansili) is a half-sister to Querari by Oasis Dream, a champion older horse in Germany in 2010 and a Group 1 winner. She is also a half-sister to the Grade 2 winner Quidura (Dubawi), the Group 3 winner Quasillo (Sea The Stars), and Sharja Bridge (Oasis Dream), winner of the Listed Doncaster Mile and placed in the Sandown Mile (G2).
Third dam Quebrada was a champion two and three-year-old filly in Germany, dam of three black-type winners. (20:06)
Lot 39: the colt by War Front, offered by Native Trail's consignor Oak Tree Farm, is fought over by Satish Seemar, sat in the gods, and bloodstock agent Ted Durcan, the latter emerging victorious at 425,000gns.
"He is from a marvellous stable, he is a smashing looking horse, smashing moving horse, vets are happy, he is going into training with Joseph Parr in Newmarket. He is a beautiful stamp of a horse, and he is for owner Oliver Harris who already has horses with Joseph," said Durcan. "The horse is fairly explanatory, he did smashing breeze. He is obvious and you have to pay for them. He does look more of a 7f horse."
Consignor Norman Williamson said: "I have to give Mark McStay a mention, I knew I'd had luck with War Of Will [also by War Front and breezed by Williamson] and he said 'Listen there is a War Front colt out here [the US] that has not been sold'.
"Tim Hyde Jnr went out to the farm and took videos and all the rest, so really without Mark we would not have got to him."
The colt went through the ring as a yearling not sold at $170,000, Mark McStay signing later at that price under the Avenue Bloodstock banner.
Williamson added: "He is a beautiful horse, he really is. Let's hope he is a race horse, but he is beautiful and his breeze was beautiful too. He has a fantastic action, we are delighted – let's hope he is a champion."
Williamson said that the colt has a definite likeness to War Of Will, winner of the Preakness Stakes (G1) and the Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (G1) and now at stud at Claiborne Farm for $25,000.
"He is very similar – action and attitude, he is always fresh and happy with life, which is interesting. If he is as good then we will be more than happy. he is very like him. Size and build-wise for a War Front he is very like him, big and strong and a lot of scope."
The colt's dam Pine Needles (Giant'Causeway) was Grade 3 placed and is a daughter of the Oaks d'Italia (G1) winner Meridiana (Lomitas), the dam of nine winners, including three black-type winners. (19:16)
Lot 29: is the first at this year's Craven Sale to sell for over 500,000gns, the Kodiac colt from Tally-Ho Stud fetching 525,000gns. The successful buyer was trainer David Loughnane, who was standing on the back wall, underbidder was Oliver St Lawrence on the stairwell. Loughnane signed for the horse under his own name and in association with OMNI Horse.
"I loved everything about him, he is a lovely animal, he is very well balanced, he did an exceptional breeze, the fastest breeze of the lot," said Loughnane. "He just looks an out and out Royal Ascot horse. He has a very good pedigree, his dam was a very good two-year-old for Mark Johnston. I love everything about him, he has a lot of quality and let's hope he can back up on the track, fingers crossed
Of ownership plans, Loughnane said: "He is for a new syndicate. I didn't think that we would have to go that far for him, I knew he was not going to be cheap, but thankfully I have some owners who are willing to back him. The sire has done it year in and year out and he comes from a very good farm in Tally-Ho Stud."
The colt is a homebred, the first foal out of the mare No Lippy, a six-year-old daughter of Oasis Dream. She was bought by Tally-Ho at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2018 as a two-year-old for 20,000gns. She achieved a BHA rating of 88 and won three races for Johnston, the first on her career debut in April. (18:53)
Lot 18: Harry Angel's first breeze-up offering makes 180,000gns, the colt out of Matroshka (Red Ransom) bought by Avenue Bloodstock from M.C. Thoroughbreds. He was a 23,000gns October Book 2 yearling purchase last year.
The colt is a half-brother to five winners, including the Group 2-placed Ketil (Karakontie).
Matroshka is a half-sister to the black-type winners Whazzis and Whazzat, the latter the dam of the Mill Reef Stakes (G2) winner and the Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) runner-up James Garfield. She is also a half-sister to the dam of Uni, a four-time Grade 1 winner in the states.
It is the star family of Rafha, Invincible Spirit, Pride Of Dubai, Chiang Mai, and Chinese White. (18:28)
Lot 9: Richard Brown goes to 225,000gns for this Night Of Thunder colt from Tally-Ho Stud. He is out of the Ghostzapper mare Letterfromamerica, the colt bought as a foal from Plantation Stud for €77,000 in 2020.
"We have a long and growing relationship with Tally-Ho Stud," said Richard Brown, whose star purchase from the farm last year was the dual Group 1-winning juvenile Perfect Power.
"This colt did a fabulous breeze, I loved all of it. Night Of Thunder is a proper sire and on the way to an even higher profile. I do not have a client as such for him, but I am sure plenty who will want to train a colt like this!" (18:18)
Lot 2A: Dubai-based trainer Satish Seemar goes to 210,000gns for the wildcard entry. The colt by Saxon Warrior is the first by the sire, who has had one winner in France already, to sell at a European two-year-old breeze-up sale.
The February-born colt, a first foal out of the Sea The Stars mare Kinaesthesia, a daughter of the Listed winner and Sweet Solera Stakes (G3) third Kinetica, was consigned by Johnny Collins's Brown Island Stables.
The colt will be travelling to Dubai shortly with a view to racing in November to take advantage of the growing juvenile programme in Dubai. He will ship straight to Dubai with a batch of two other horses.
"He was early in and we were happy to find one at the beginning of the sale,"said Seemar, adding: "One of our regular clients in Dubai has a liking for the Japanese breeding so it was perfect match. Visually this horse was very impressive, he passed the vet so he is a good purchase, but I knew with action the horse was getting we would have to pay a premium.
"He will acclimatise and will be ready to race in November or December. We have ben working hard at getting breeze-up horses for the last six or so years, if you don't bring in new blood then the racing programme never improves."
Of his opinion as to whether this colt will be a type to suit the Dirt racing programme in Dubai, Seemar said: "Two-year-olds have not started anywhere so I don't think there are preconceived ideas in the head that they like this or that." (18:05)
Selling for the first session of the Craven Sale 2022 starts in 25 minutes. (17:04)
Tattersalls 2021 Craven Sale graduate wins the Group 3 Nell Gwyn: Cachet, who was a 60,000gns Highclere Agency purchase at the Craven Sale last year, galloped to a two and a half length victory in the Group 3 7f Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket today. The three-year-old filly, who finished third in the Fillies' Mile (G1) and second in the Rockfel Stakes (G2) last season, is the first Group race winner for her sire Aclaim (Acclamation), who stands at the neighbouring National Stud.
She was bred and breezed by John Bourke's Hyde Park Stud, and Bourke is back in Newmarket with four breeze-up prospects for this week's Craven Sales, all due to sell in the Day 2 session.
"She has always been a queen," says Bourke of Cachet. "Her trainer George Boughey has done an unbelievable job, I also have to thank Tattersalls for taking her for the Craven Sale last year and Jake Warren for buying her."
Bourke purchased Cachet's dam Poyle Sophie for just 3,000gns at the Tattersalls December Sale 2018.
"Teofilo is a great broodmare sire and I bought the mare really on the strength of him and the fact that she was carrying to Aclaim," says Bourke. "She always gets belting foals and they have all been fillies so far. She had a Cotai Glory last year, who I had entered to sell as a foal but withdrew on the strength of Cachet. Poyle Sophie is currently in-foal to Mehmas."
Bourke had previously offered Cachet as yearling at the Tattersalls Ascot September Sale and bought her back for 14,000gns.
She is now a 20/1 chance for the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, May 1.

February Sale 2022
Chairman's Statement: At the conclusion of the 2022 Tattersalls February Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“It is good to have made a positive start to 2022. Last year’s Tattersalls February Sale was conducted under particularly trying circumstances so significant increases in all the key indicators were to be expected, but nevertheless for this year’s February Sale to produce a record median, turnover and average bettered only once, and a clearance rate of 85% is a clear indication of a robust market.
“The quality consignments from Godolphin and Shadwell Estates have again drawn widespread international participation and it is a tribute to the enduring appeal of stock from these two outstanding operations that all of the top ten highest prices at the sale were owned or bred by either Shadwell or Godolphin.
“The obvious highlight of the past two days was the 175,000gns Shadwell-bred Night of Thunder yearling out of Elshaadin, who was the second highest priced yearling ever sold at the February Sale, but as is so often the case at Tattersalls sales of this nature, the remarkable diversity of the buyers has been the outstanding feature.
"Buyers from throughout Europe, the Gulf region and further afield have all made a significant contribution, either in person or bidding online, and the domestic demand has also been a source of encouragement for the wider industry as we look forward to a year of trading hopefully largely unencumbered by the challenges which we have all endured over the past two years." Lot 435: the Group 3-placed Wuqood (Dubawi) consigned by Barton Sales for Shadwell Estate is sold for a session top price of 170,000gns. The four-year-old colt is joining the draft of horses heading to Saudi Arabia - he is another purchase by Najd Stud.
"He goes to Saudi. I think this horse has a small issue about his wind, but we think, inshallah, he might improve on the Dirt surface and also for castration. He will go to the leading trainer Abdullah Mishref Al-Kahtani," said Saud al Qahtani.
Trained by Dermot Weld for Sheikh Hamdan, Wuqood finished second in the 1m1f Eyrefield Stakes (G3) in October 2020 and then picked up Listed placed form in the 1m2f Trigo Stakes last October. He is rated 102.
He hails from the same pedigree of Saddler's Rock, Gamut, and Multicoloured as Lot 276 and is out of the Group 2 winner and Oaks runner-up Tarfasha (Teofilo). (16:29)
Lot 425: "This is the one we really came for," said Andre Pereira after going to 78,000gns for Habit Rouge, a gelding by Helmet sold by Marco Botti's Prestige Place Stables.
"He is a nice horse, he should act on the Dirt surface and he gets a mile to 1m2f. We hope he will be good enough for the bigger races in Saudi."
Habit Rouge has won four times and is rated 93 – he finished second off the mark on January 8 at Lingfield over 1m2f.
He was originally bought as a yearling at the Tattersalls September Yearling Sale in 2018 by Ambrosiana Razza from Knocklong House Stud for €20,000. (16:19)
Lot 417: Conall Meegan of Beechmore Bloodstock buys Sydney Street from The Castlebridge Consignment and Hugo Palmer's Kremlin Cottage Stables for 85,000gns. The purchase has been made on behalf of Shawn Dugan, agent, and the son of Dark Angel is shipping to California.
"We have done a bit of business with Shawn in the last 12 months and we have had some success," said Meegan. "He goes to California and looks ready-made for racing there. He was my pick of the sale, he was the one let's hope it works out."
Meegan added: "He has a great demeanour, he has plenty of size, he is clean limbed, we have watched his form and liked what we saw, and the trainer has done a great job. Hopefully he will be up to stakes class right away and I think California on the coast is where he needs to be." (16:15)
Lot 415: Saudi Arabian-based Najd Stud, which was busy throughout the autumn at Tattersalls buying horses to race on Saudi, goes to 67,000gns for Velazquez.
"He is by Caravaggio so should suit the racing in Saudi,"said Saud al Qahtani, consultant for Najd Stud. :He has an okay rating, but we hope he will be a good horse. If he improves he may suit the good races."
The gelding is rated 85 and won on December 28, 2021 over 7f at Newcastle. (16:14)
Lot 413: Army General is heading to Saudi Arabia bought by agent Andre Pereira on behalf of owner Yousef Alturaif for 53,000gns.
"He has been bought by Saudi interests and the plan is to run on Dirt," said Pereira, "The horse seems to be quite versatile so he could be tried on Turf, too. The main ambition is to run on Dirt and win a few races. How good he can be, it is to see. He is a lovely looking horse, a nice sort, and is by War Front so he should suit the Dirt.
"He has the nice size, is well fleshed out, a good looking horse and that is what we liked about him."
Army General was previously trained by John and Thady Gosden. He is still a maiden fro just four starts and is rated 73. (15:55)
Lot 351: regular Tattersalls buyer, the leading Qatari trainer Jassim Al Ghazali, buys Rockfire, the colt by Sea The Stars sold by Godolphin. Ghazali is busy training at home as the Qatar's big international meeting is just a fortnight away, so agent Will Douglass was in charge of bidding successfully buying the three-year-old at 46,000gns.
Rockfire has now run six times and finished second on his last three starts in handicaps at Wolverhampton, Lingfield and Southwell off a consistent BHA mark of 65. (14:00)
Lot 342: Ted Durcan buys two in succession from the Godolphin draft – Perseus Way (Sea The Stars) for 80,000gns and Age Of Sail (Frankel), who cost the agent 60,000gns.
"The Sea The Stars gelding has been bought for a new syndicate of lads, who want a nice fun horse. He vetted out extremely well and is a fine, big scopey horse. The winter will have helped him and he will improve with time. He stays in England, but no training plans have been made as yet," said Durcan.
"Age Of Sail is for an existing owner and will stay in England, too," added Durcan. "He ran once at Goodwood at the back end of the season, it was soft ground stuff and he was a weak horse last year."
The pair are both Godolphin homebreds – Age Of Sail is a grandson of Snow Bridge (Blushing Groom), the dam of the champion three-year-old Lammtarra, while Perseus Seas is a grandson of the Group 1-placed Firth Of Lorne (Danehill), dam of the Group 2 winner Master Of The Seas. (13:16)
Lot 331: Social Contract is bought back by her breeder Longview Stud & Bloodstock for 65,000gns from Clipper Logistics.
The daughter of Night Of Thunder won on January 16 at Southwell for trainer Roger Varian and the form is already working out well – the second placed filly Kissininthebackrow has won since.
Social Contract has now run three times having finished fourth first time out and then second before getting the win by her name.
"We bred and sold her as a yearling for 44,000gns [Tattersalls Ascot, 2020], but, as she has won a race now, the boss was keen to buy her back," said farm manager Jim Scallan.
"She stays in training now, but should be a nice broodmare for the future and we wanted a filly out of the mare Operettist. She has had three out of three now and we have a nice filly by Postponed out of her in the field, and we have a two-year-old in training with William Haggas. He is by Night Of Thunder and is very nice, too." (12:56)
Lot 316 and Lot 317: both were sold by Barton Sales, both are from the Shadwell draft, both are unraced three-year-olds and both were bought by trainer George Boughey, who was standing in the bidders' area with Sam Haggas. The purchases were signed by Hurworth Bloodstock.
Ensaat (Lot 316) is a son of Kodiac from the family of Kingsgate Native, bred by Lynn Lodge and sold as a yearling to Shadwell for 110,000gns at the October Yearling Sale 2020, while Lahiq (Lot 317) is out of the good racemare Beauly, daughter of Pickle and from the family of Gale Force Ten. He is by Quality Road.
Ensaat cost his new connections 26,000gns, while Lahiq, who was a $400,000 yearling, was a 40,000gns purchase.
Boughey said: "They have both been bought on spec. We have had some success from the last couple of Shadwell drafts, and we are very happy to get two nice horses. We are looking to buy some nice three-year-old types, we bought lots of two-year-old sorts last year. These both have some nice pedigrees to get into, perhaps a different type of horse to what we have had and ones who might get a bit further.
"They are blank canvasses really, the Kodiac is a half to Hype who was better at three, was rated 90 and from a Galileo mare, the Quality Road colt is a big scopey horse who I imagine did not do a lot at two and will only come into himself in the summer.
"The way we look at it, the homework has been done, so hopefully two horse to look for ward to for this year and onwards. They both should have had their time off in the winter so we will press on now." (12:16)
