Lot 1993:
the Havana Gold bay half-sister to the US Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II winner Kitten's Dumplings, the stakes winners Granny's Kitten and Granny Mc's Kitten, sold by Culworth Grounds, is bought by Federico Barberini for 55,000gns.
Dam Granny Franny, the winner of three races and dam of five winners, was bought at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale 2019 by Tweenhills Farm & Stud for 155,000gns.
(19:21)
Lot 1959:
the Aclaim half-sister to Washington Heights (Washington DC), who has finished third in the Listed Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar since the catalogue was published, is bought by Dwayne Woods for 90,000gns.
"The mare has had a great catalogue update, the filly is very nice, is the first by Aclaim that I have bought, and she goes to my bother Sean," said Woods.
She was sold by breeder Bearstone Stud and the farm's Terry Holdcroft said: "There was a lot of interest in the filly, the update obviously helped but she is a very, very nice filly in her own right. She was vetted quite a few times. Aclaim has done very well, she is young mare so it is great."
The unraced mare Epping Rose (Kodiac) is a half-sister to three stakes performers, headed up by the Group 1 runner-up The Last Drop
(18:46)
Lot 1935:
bloodstock agent Alex Elliott has had to leave Park Paddocks, but he left instructions in the capable hands of his assistant Lucy Ryan and she successfully buys this colt by Due Diligence for 70,000gns.
"Alex saw the colt before he left," said Ryan, who added: "He has been bought for Atlantic Equine and is going to trainer Clive Cox. The mare has done it already – she has produced a horse rated 104, and her two-year-old Destined finished second the other week first time out. This is a nice colt and the trainer gets on well with progeny by the sire."
The March-born bay colt was bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and is out of the Sakhee's Secret mare Cross My Heart, dam of this year's Group 3 Summer Stakes runner-up Adaay To Remember.
Cross My Heart is a half-sister to two stakes winners
Her half-brother is the talented and tough Kyllachy gelding Stepper Point, the winner of ten races, including the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes and Flying Five Stakes (G3). He was also placed 17 times, with the highlights being second placings in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) and Nunthorpe Stakes (G1).
Her half-sister is Lady In France (Showcasing), winner of the Arran Sprint Stakes (L), third-placed in the Temple Stakes (G2) and the Prix du Petit Couvert (G3).
(18:00)
Lot 1930:
"She is a lovely filly, the stallion has come good and she has been bought to go breezing for Roger O'Callaghan at Tally-Ho Stud," said Tom Biggs of Blandford Bloodstock after paying 77,000gns for this filly by Zoustar sold by Jamie Railton (agent). She is out of the Cockney Rebel mare Cockney Dancer, dam of the stakes performer Lambeth Walk.
Her second dam is the influential Roo (Rudimentary), whose descendants include Mohaather, Prize Exhibit, Accidental Agent and this year's May Hill Stakes (G2) winner Polly Pott, who also finished fourth in the Fillies Mile (G1) last time out.
Biggs added: "We are hoping to repeat the trick of Lezoo," referencing to the stallion's leading European first-crop filly, Group 1 winner of the Cheveley Park Stakes. She was bred and sold as a yearling by Chasemore Farm, was bought here at Book 3 in 2021, and subsequently breezed and sold by Tally-Ho Stud.
Biggs laughed: "I told Roger that they paid exactly the same amount to buy for Lezoo as a yearling!"
He added: "This filly is from a very fast precocious family and the that seems to be what is working best with the Zoustars. She is also a half-sister to a pretty decent and precocious horse in Lambeth Walk.
"Roger had not seen her here, but I sent him the video this morning and he was very happy. I have been trying to buy him one all sales season, I left it late!"
(17:43)
Lot 1895:
the last lot from a draft of four consigned this week by pinhooking siblings Chris and Tara Armstrong of Beechvale Stud pushes the bidding over 50,000gns until the hammer dropped on trainer Paddy Twomey's bid of 62,000gns.
The colt by Study Of Man had been purchased as a foal by the Beechvale pair for 31,000gns from the Barton Stud consignment here last December.
"We buy a handful of foals each year, at the time Study Of Man was not on our list," reported Chris Armstrong. "We were down with the Barton consignment and he stood out as a physical. He has done well at home and he has come along through the year lovely, has physically done well. He has a great attitude, a good walk and today he stood out a little bit. It is good to see he is going to be very good hotel."
Of the week's transactions, Armstrong reported: "We had an Australia colt we sold yesterday – we had spent 31,000gns on him and got 65,000gns, and earlier in the week we sold a Saxon Warrior colt for 90,000gns to Jean Claude Rouget, we had paid 52,000gns for him. We have one to take back home, but overall, we have done ok and will be back in November to reinvest."
The brother and sister have very busy day jobs: "I am racing secretary for Aidan O'Brien and Tara is with Joseph O'Brien. The farm is near Lisburn in County Atrium and our parents look after the foals when we are not there – they do them very well and we are very lucky. It is a nice result to get."
(16:32)
Lot 1878:
"She is going to Jane Chapple-Hyam," reported Amanda Skiffington after spending 50,000gns on the daughter of first-crop yearling sire Ten Sovereigns, sold by Deer Forest Stud.
"She is very athletic, it is a family I like very much and I have liked the progeny by the sire."
The filly is out of the Oasis Dream mare Almoner, a full-sister to Dux Scholar, a Listed winner of the Steventon Stakes and twice Group 2 placed in Germany.
It is the further family of the Group 1 winners Creative Force, Persuasive and Ventura.
Chapple-Hyam, of course, has once again had a great season on the track this season courtesy of her leading light and dual Group 1 winner Saffron Beach, who took the Group 1 Prix Rothschild this summer. The daughter of New Bay is to be offered at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in the inaugural Sceptre Session on Tuesday, November 29.
(15:45)
Lot 1827:
Nick Bradley had to go one over 40,000gns in order to secure the Havana Gold consigned by Culworth Grounds Farm.
The bay filly is out of the Prix Miesque (G3) winner Stella Blue, dam of Sirius Prospect (Gone West), a ten-time winner of three Listed races and third placed in the British Champion Sprint Stakes (G2), and Bama Breeze, a US Grade 2 fourth placed gelding by Honor Code.
(14:25)
Lot 1798:
the sale of this filly marked the end of an era... she is a daughter of Clodovil and is the last yearling to sell by the Rathasker Stud-based son of Danehill. Born on April 22, the grey filly was bred by the farm out of the Sir Percy mare Scarlet Wings and was bought today by Julie Wood's Woodstock for 37,000gns.
"She is a lovely filly," said Rathasker's Maurice Burns. "The dam's two-year-old of this year Menalippe is the winner of two races and is well-regarded by trainer James Ferguson, she might run in the Montrose Stakes. This filly had the same way of going as all of Clodovil's progeny.:
Of the end of Clodovil's covering duties, Burns said: "He is alive and kicking, just age has caught up with him. People who had any of his stock always returned and came to the door at the sales to see his stock – Julie had Manderley, who finished fourth in the 1,000 Guineas. They have a bit of spark and are very genuine."
(13:25)
Lot 1771:
another Golden Horn appeals to the buyers, trainer Michael Dods spending 37,000gns on this filly sold Clearwater Stud.
She is the first foal out of the three-time winner Pure Shores (Dubawi), a daughter of the dual Listed winner and 18-time placed mare Polly's Mark (Mark Of Esteem), who was second in the Lancashire Oaks (G2). The mare had a colt by Expert Eye this spring and was covered by Farhh.
(12:31)
Lot 1721 :
The Castlebridge Consignment-offered colt out of the Listed winner and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes-placed Madeline, goes to Rabbah Bloodstock for 45,000gns.
The bay colt, by the first-crop yearling sire Darley sire Blue Point, is from the family of the 2014 champion older mare Thistle Bird and this year's stakes winner Jumbly.
(12:29)
Lot 1711 :
the Zoffany filly out of Last Gold (Gold Away), sold by Castletown Stud, is bought by Hugo Merry Bloodstock for 65,000gns
The colt is half-sister to Lumiere Rock (Saxon Rock), winner of the Silken Glider Stakes (G3) at the beginning of October. A 55,000gns October Book 3 graduate, she hold an entry in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Hugo Merry said of his purchase: "The pedigree update is what switched me on to her, and she is a lovely filly. I think Zoffany had always flown a little under the radar, but he has always got a lot of highly rated horses and this year the Group 1 winner Prosperous Voyage.
"I was a little surprised to see her catalogued today, she would have been suited by earlier in the week. She is for an owner with Paddy Twomey."
(11:32)
Lot 1708:
the good morning for Oakgrove Stud continues... this filly by Ten Sovereigns is bought for 90,000gns by Joe Stone on behalf of Rabbah Bloodstock.
"She is for trainer Ismali Mohammed," said Stone. "We have been trying all week and last week and really wanted a filly. She is a really nice type, and by a good first-season sire . We also bought two in Book 1."
David Hilton, stud manager for Oakgrove, was at the sale ring to watch the pair go through.
He said: "The Golden Horn colt, first foal out of a Kingman half-sister to Al Kazeem, had a lot of quality and is a very good-looking horse, delighted we have sold him well. The Ten Sovereigns filly is a bit of a stand-out – she has a pedigree, the mare does not miss, she is a half-sister to two stakes horses, she is a good physical, moves well. We are delighted withe price, but I think she deserved to make that as well. She could have been earlier in the sale and we just stood out today."
Of the decision to use Ten Sovereigns on the mare, Hilton recalled: "We wanted to get back to speed, Mr Deer really likes the stallion, thought what he did at Newmarket was exceptional. We were happy to use a first-season sire and we were very happy with this filly all the way through. We have used him again and I am sure he is going to make it."
Oakgrove still has a draft left to sale, and Hilton is looking forward to bringing them up to the ring.
"I have got four left, and have a very nice horse by Territories [Lot 1801], he is a very nice physical," he outlined.
(10:47)
Lot 1704:
"It has been hard work this week," said Dwayne Woods after buying this colt for 40,000gns from Oakgrove Stud.
"We only saw him this morning at 9.15, did a rapid vetting and have bought him," explained Woods. "He is beautiful horse, more for me he looks like an Invincible Spirit. By Golden Horn you would not expect him to be early but this colt looks as though he will run at two. He looks a real forward horse and he has a proper page, he is for Sean [Woods]," said Woods. "I am absolutely happy to have one by Golden Horn, he has had a good season."
Of the week, he added: "We have bought plenty, am happy with everything we have bought, but every time I got up to a big one at 250,000gns to 300,000gns.... I was underbidder on at least five horses over 200,000gns."

Lot 1655:
Shane Power of Tradewinds Stud got a fine result at the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale selling a New Bay colt for €115,000, as well as a filly by Due Diligence for €78,000, and the consignor repeated the trick again today with this filly by Ribchester.
She was bought as a foal for 17,000gns at the Tattersalls December Sale and Power sold today for 85,000gns to Joe Foley. She is the only Book 3 lot consigned Tradewinds, but early this week Power and the team had consigned four lots in Book 2. The quartet's sales were headed by Lot 576, a colt by Magnia Grecia, who sold for 115,000gns, and a Twilight Son filly (Lot 1312), who fetched 110,000gns
"I am absolutely delighted with that!" exclaimed Power back at the filly's box in the Terrace Yard. "Physically she was the best horse we had all year, and she just put on display every time someone came down to see her here. She has the strength of a colt, but the quality and class of a filly. When people were standing here in the middle of the yard, looking at different horses, every time they would see her and say 'What is that?'
Power added: ""Joe has been very good to us this season, and also bought a filly from us at Fairyhouse. That is us done now, we'll be back to start again in a month!"
(20:06)
Lot 1617 :
the Territories colt out of Crystal Etoile sold by New England Stud fetches 65,000gns, bought by Ollie Sangster. He is half-brother to our winners and two black-type horses – Crystal Pegasus (Australia), winner of the Listed Mornington Cup, and to Crystal Hope, who finished third in the Newbury Fillies Trial (L) and fourth in the Gillies Stakes (L).
Second dam is the Fred Darling Stakes (G3) runner-up and acclaimed broodmare Crystal Star. She is the dam of Crystal Ocean, the European champion older horse of 2019, Hillstar, winner of the Canadian International Stakes (G1), the Group 2 winner Crystal Capella, as well as Crystal Zvezda, winner of the Newbury Fillies Trial (L).
(18:52)
Lot 1595:
this Invincible Army colt, offered by Yeomanstown Stud and bred by Cavalier Bloodstock, makes 95,000gns, bought by Kevin Ross Bloodstock.
He is out of Capomento (Casamento), a winner at two, runner-up in the Star Stakes (L) and four in the Prix du Calvados (G3).
Her first foal Capofan has placed once as a two-year-old.
Invincible Army has three lots left to sell. Ahead of those final few, the son of Invincible Spirit has achieved a turnover of 1,311,000gns for 21 lots sold , an average price of 62,429gns and a median of 65,000gns with his first crop of yearlings sold at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales.
(17:57)
Lot 1571:
"I have been incredibly lucky with Camacho in the past," said David Redvers after spending 105,000gns on this daughter of the sire and sold by Lodge Park Stud. "He has been one of my luckiest stallions, I have bought five or six stakes winners by him. We have been phenomenally lucky with him."
The filly is out of the homebred mare Alyssum, now dam of this year's Sweet Solero Stakes (G3) second-placed Dandy Alys (Dandy Man) and Hard One Please (Fast Company), who won the Stockholm Cup International (G3) since the catalogue went to press.
Redvers continued: "The mare catalogues up unbelievably well now with the updates – this filly would have deserved a place in Book 2 and would have deserved to have made twice that in Book 2. I loved her physical, her athletic action and the pedigree makes sense. I have bought her entirely on spec, I will put her up to Sheikh Fahad and David Howden and we will see what happens, I am in for a good bit of her, she is exactly what we need."
Of the breeder, Redvers enthused: "The farm is probably in the top five best breeders in Europe – I bought Ocean Road from Lodge Park and she is now a Grade 1 filly [Book 1, 2019, 150,000gns].
Damian Burns of Lodge Park said: "This filly is what we are all about really – using nice proven stallions such as Fast Company and Dandy Man and then we can reap the benefits the following year. The mare is nine years old and is nice to have at home."
Looking ahead to Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday, Redvers said: "Really looking forward to Saturday, there will be a massive crowd. Hopefully the sun will be shining and it is what championship racing is all about with the best horse in the world running there."
(17:10)
Lot 1559:
the Nathaniel filly from Ballylinch Stud is added to Alex Elliott's purchases today – the agent spending 80,000gns on the chestnut filly, who is a half-sister to the Group 2 runner-up Juan de Montalban (Lope De Vega).
She is out of the Samum mare Abilene, a multiple Listed-placed runner and a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix du Moulin runner-up Akatea.
(16:20)
Lot 1499:
another sale of a filly by Havana Grey, another six-figure sale... this filly bred by Carmel Stud out of the Kyllachy mare So Brave makes 125,000gns, bought by Joe Foley for Clipper Logistics.
"She is a lovely filly, we saw her yesterday, she was the first one we saw, she was recommended to us by the breeders and by Ed Harper from Whitsbury," said Foley. "She is a really good-looking filly from a fast mare who I remember when she was with Archie Watson, she was real speedy fast two-year-old. This her first foal, and importantly the breeders are mating the mare well – she has a foal by Showcasing and she has been to Pinatubo, which is encouraging for us."
Of the sire, Foley said: "She is by a highly promising young stallion who has done so well. We underbid a colt yesterday and were keen to buy a nice one, hopefully a good one, by him.
"Last year you could see they were all of a mould – he was either going to be a very good stallion or a very bad stallion, luckily for the team at Whitsbury he is the former not the latter. They are so genuine, like himself. We have a filly, the sister to Mrs Danvers, who is yet to run and she is in training with Karl Burke. We were keen to get another one."
Foley has bought 55 yearlings so far this autumn for Clipper Logistics and the associated syndicate Bronte.
Of this year's yearling trade, Foley offered a few thoughts on the reasons for the strong market.
"It has been strong from the start and strong today, which is brilliant to see. It just shows the fortitude of this business, it is a great sport, a great business, and people get fun out of investing in racehorses. Maybe after the negative times we have had in the recent past and maybe will have in the future, people are keen to spend some money and have some fun. Investing in the bloodstock industry – it is fun investment!"
He added: "You can love football or cricket all you like, but you can't invest in them, you can love racing and you can invest in it – you get double the kick, gambling [with an equine investment] but also having the fun! I have seen the Bronte Syndicate this year – the fun they have had together going to Royal Ascot with four runners and having the filly placed in the Queen Mary, I saw first-hand the fun they got from the racing.
"It is a fun industry to invest in, you can't say that about many industries. Investing in stocks and shares, you don't get to go 'Yes!', enjoy a drink and have a bottle of champagne with your mates and say 'Yes, we won the Listed race!'
(14:49)
Lot 1482:
Whitsbury Manor Stud sell its Havana Grey filly, a full-sister to this year's talented two-year-old Cuban Mistress, for 115,000gns to Anthony Stroud.
A chuffed Ed Harper, who was all smiles by the entrance to the sales ring, said: “It’s been a year of updates for our mares. Mares that were in the twilight zone of our broodmare band are now mares that are zipping up the escalator and suddenly look exciting. When you get two stallions in your roster like Showcasing and Havana Grey they’re just constantly doing favours to the broodmare band. It’s just magic. It’s been a fantastic year and I’m scared that 2022 might end!"
He expanded: “We try and buy mares who suit all our stallions so they can just hop around the roster. There seems to be an uncanny nick between Sakhee’s Secret mares and Havana Grey as he’s had a Cornwallis winner, a St Hugh’s Stakes winner and an exciting-looking filly for Michael Dods from just three runners out of Sakhee’s Secret mares."
Laughing, he added: "Anyone with a Sakhee’s Secret filly seems to be ringing me up at the moment.”
(14:22)
Lot 1488:
the son of Gleneagles from the family of the recent Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden winner Mendocino is bought by Cormac McCormack for 140,000gns from Croom House Stud.
"He is for MV Magnier, trainer not decided!" said McCormack. "He is the nicest horse in the sale, he is a lovely horse, a great step, good delivery and a touch of class about him. Everyone says that [Coolmore] only buys expensive horses, but I think this is a nice horse. The colt was well placed in the sale by his owner and was well paid."
The colt is the mare's second foal – her first who is named Passing Storm (Starspangledbanner) was a Tattersalls Ireland September Manor House Stud purchase in 2021 for €67,200. She has run twice and is entered for Saturday.
He is out of the Pivotal mare Shannow, an own-sister to the dam of Mendocino and the German Group 3 winner Marshmallow.
The family stretches right back to the Derby winner Mill Reef Stakes (G2).
(14:04)
Lot 1426:
the filly by first-crop yearling sire Calyx is purchased by BBA Ireland for 105,000gns. She was bought for 12,000gns as a foal by Rockview Stables, who sold her today.
Eleanor Dunne of Rockview reported : "We just thought she was a very attractive, racy filly and she was out of a Dubawi mare. But we got very lucky with the update, we only knew that there was a colt in Tom Dascombe's but he's gone on and won a couple of times again [since the catalogue was published] and then on Saturday he got the black type at York. She's been fantastic since she got to the farm, thrived all the way through her prep: she has a wonderful temperament and has been a pleasure to be around.
That update came courtesy of Felix Natalis - he is the mare's first foal, has won three races as a two-year-old and collected a third placing in the Rockingham Stakes (L).
(12:12)
Lot 1420 and Lot 1421:
the two consecutive lots are bought by Alex Elliott – Lot
1420 is by Sea The Moon out of the St Simon Stakes (G3) runner-up Mountain Bell (Mount Nelson), while Lot
1421 is by Masar and out of the winning Mediciean mare Movementneverlies.
The duo cost the agent 100,000gns and 68,000gns.
Elliott said: "The Sea The Moon is going to Ralph Beckett, who trained the dam. I actually bought the mare last year off Qatar and she was a very good race filly for Ralph. I thought this horse was a stand-out today, I thought he was more of a Book 2 horse.
"He has size, scope, he vetted well, and I am a big fan of the stallion. He is going to take a bit of time, but we don't mind giving them that."
Elliott purchased the colt for a young partnership named Valmont, and he outlined: "We have had a first year on the track this season, we generally buy three-year-old types. We have had a lot of good maiden winners, and we also just got beaten in the Oh So Sharp the other day. There is a little bit of a gap in the market if you've got the patience to do it."
He added: "Then once you are on the wheel you've got the action – so early on next year we will have all that first batch running in Guineas Trials and Oaks Trials, and then this year's purchases will come through after that. We thought the first year was going to be a bit slow, but luckily they have performed well – when you have Ralph Beckett in your corner it is a huge help."
The horses will be traded at varying points in their careers: "We want good horses – for example we have Batemans Bay who was fourth in the Zetland. He will be a very good three-year-old, and Australians have got an interest in him already – he is by New Bay out of a Galileo mare. It is a run by one of my best pals so it is fun as well, especially when they run. It is huge for me and it is just really enjoyable."
Lot
1421 was also bought by Elliott on behalf of a syndicate and he said: "He has been bought for The Lucra Partnership, a staying partnership we have with Ralph. We buy five horses a year, one of the first horses we had was New Mandate, whom we sold for a lot of money so everyone is on the pig's back because of that!"
Of this purchase, Elliot said: "This was a little bit more than we usually spend, we have a 50,000gns budget for each horse but it has been impossible to buy a nice horse for 50,000gns – it seems that 50,000gns is the old 10,000gns! You used to be able to buy these stayers for 10,000gns, and now you can't buy a nice horse for that. So we had to stretch. We have one more to buy so we will have to come under budget."
(12:07)
Lot 1406:
the Cotai Glory colt out of Maremmasanta (Kodiac) from The Forge Stables is bought by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 55,000gns.
Maremmasanta won five races and was placed 18 times, including at Listed level in Italy. This is her third foal, she had a colt by the same sire this spring and was covered by him again.
Cotai Glory's leading runner is the tough hardy two-year-old The Platinum Queen, winner of the Prix de l'Abbaye (G1). She is also out of a mare by Kodiac.

Lot 1384:
the Whitsbury Manor Stud-bred and consigned Showcasing half-sister to Shouldvebeenaring, Havana Grey's Ripon Champion 2yo Trophy winner, is bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for 115,000gns.
Brown said: "She has been bought for Sheikh Juma for whom we bought Swingalong for last year. He was very keen to buy another Showcasing, we have been beaten on everything we wanted to buy. I saw this filly yesterday morning, I immediately called my vet and then called the Sheikh and said that I thought we'd found one.
"I am delighted to get her, a good update and she comes from a very good farm in Whitsbury. She will go to Karl [Burke], who trains Swingalong. Funnily enough I was looking at her at quarter to eight this morning and Karl came into the yard and I thought, 'I wonder where he will go?!' He came over and pulled her out. So we aligned and luckily Sheikh Juma was willing to have a crack."
Brown added: "If she is half as good as Swingalong we will be alright."
The Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Swingalong, a 2021 Tattersalls Book 2 graduate, bought by Blandford for 120,000gns, was fourth last time out in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1).
"She was the biggest filly in the field there so I think she will get further next year," reasoned Brown. "I would say she she'll start in one of the Guineas trials. Will she get a mile? I don't know, but I think 7f will definitely be within her range. If I was guessing, and it is not my decision, she might turn up at Newbury for the Fred Darling."

Lot 1376:
the first to 100,000gns this morning is this colt by Night Of Thunder, sold by Ballyhimikin Stud continuing the strong October Sale that James Hanley's farm has enjoyed with the stallion's yearlings.
This lad was bought by Nick Bell, who said: "He is for Peter Trainor, we have bid on a few horses over the last few weeks and hadn't succeeded; I think he'd thought he'd got away without having to buy one! When I saw this horse I loved him and he will be going back to Michael Bell. He will be a nice fun horse for the summer.
"The stallion needs no introduction, and this looks a really solid horse and will hopefully provide a lot of fun. Buying has been tough, I did not think we'd have to give that much for him, but the nice ones you have to give a little bit extra for and I am delighted we have got him."
Night Of Thunder was the leading sire at three-day Book 2 Sale by aggregate – 25 horses sold for a gross of 4,025,000gns.

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2
Chairman's statement:
At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“Three extraordinary record-breaking days at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale have been followed by a second consecutive record-breaking renewal of Book 2.
“The word most commonly used to describe the trade we have experienced throughout this week has been ‘unrelenting’. There have been records established in pretty well every conceivable category. Turnover, average and median have all reached unprecedented levels and yet again Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has been the second-highest grossing yearling sale in Europe, second only to Book 1. The number of yearlings selling for 200,000 guineas or more is a wide margin record as is the number selling for 300,000 guineas or more and never before have seven yearlings at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale broken the 500,000 guineas mark.
“Following on from Book 1, buyers from America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and throughout the Gulf region have all continued to make significant contributions over the past three days. European buyers have also been conspicuous at all levels of the market while the domestic British and Irish demand continues to be the bedrock of Europe’s largest yearling sale which annually showcases so many of the best commercial yearlings to be found and consistently produces top class horses like this year’s outstanding unbeaten Derby winner Desert Crown.
“The support we receive from so many breeders and consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield is the key to the enduring popularity of the October Yearling Sales at Tattersalls and is hugely appreciated. There is quality to be found at every level and next up is Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale which has produced two of this year's top European two-year-olds; Lezoo, recent winner of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and Crypto Force, the impressive winner of the Group 2 Beresford Stakes."

Lot 1321:
Ballyvolane Stud achieved a fine result in Book 2 last year when selling the Time Test colt out of Aurelia for 400,000gns, and John Foley's farm has bettered that result this year selling this colt by Starspangledbanner for 600,000gns. It is the farm's best-ever result at Tattersalls.
Last year's six-figure sum came from a pinhooked yearling – this year it is via first foal, bred by The Great Dame Partnership and out of the mare who inspired the partnership's name. A daughter of Dandy Man, she was bought by Barry Lynch at the 2019 December Sale for just 28,000gns.
Trained by David O'Meara, she won twice at two, and her wins included the Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes. She is a half-sister to the Group 3 winer Donnerschlag and the Listed winner Izzy Bizu, and an own-sister to De Boss Man, who finished third in the Round Tower Stakes (G3).
John Foley of Ballyvolane said: "She is owned by myself and good friend Jason Kelly, who is David O'Meara's assistant, and he liked the mare. We bought the syndicate out at the sale and, bred her and this is her first foal.
"I am delighted, he is a lovely, lovely horse – he has always been a mighty sort. He has great action and some of the most respected judges here liked him."
Foley particularly wanted to give a shout out to his staff: "I have very good staff, a great team both here and at home. They put in a huge effort, they are here at 5am in the morning and selling in the evening at 8pm."
The mare has a filly foal by Churchill and was covered in the spring by Ardad.
The colt was bought by Richard Knight, who said: "He was the only one we picked out in this sale, thought he was a lovely individual. He is by Starspangledbanner, who I am a big fan of having had The Wow Signal. I like the fact that the mare was a useful two-year-old herself and he looks like he will be sharp. We felt he will be a great addition to the horses we have already bought. He is a horse who should not take a huge amount of time, he is very athletic and vetted very well."
(19:09)
Lot 1303:
the sale of this athletic Lope De Vega filly developed into battle between Coolmore and Godolphin, with the latter emerging on top after Anthony Stroud placed a bid of 650,000gns as the dusk started to fall on Park Paddocks.
She was sold by John O'Connor of Ballylinch Stud, the farm having a great day having sold two of the top three lots sold today and both by the farm's stallions.
"Sometimes it just happens like this!" smiled O'Connor. "I knew she'd sell well. I did not expect that, but when you get a clash between two very interested buyers, these things can happen. There there were lots of people on her, too. This is a family we have been associated with a long time – I originally bought Ingabelle [third dam] from Tom Lacy, Tony Lacy's father, and we have bred most of the black-type on this page."
The black-type winners in the pedigree include a number of champions and Group/Grade 1 winners – the 2013 European champion two-year-old filly old Chriselliam, winner of the Fillies' Mile and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She is a half-sister to this filly's dam Gallitea (Galileo). There is also Very Special, a champion older miler in the US and a Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed. She is by Lope De Vega.
Under the third dam is Eva's Request, winner of the Premio Lydia Tesio (G1), and Priory Belle, winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) and a joint-champion Irish two-year-old of 1995.
The most recent black-type addition to the pedigree is the filly's own-brother Oviedo – the two-year-old colt has won and was placed third in Acomb Stakes (G3) since the catalogue went to press.
O'Connor continued: "Lope De Vega's stock appeals to so many people, he is such a good sire we have been blessed to have him. It is wonderful when things go your way, it is almost a surreal feeling."
The filly bounced around the sale ring throughout the bidding, kicking out and enjoying herself, and O'Connor said: "That is the kind of energy she has, and still so full of energy after being busy here. She is a filly with lots of resilience."
The mare had a No Nay Never colt this spring and is back in-foal to Lope De Vega.
Buyer Anthony Stroud said: "It is very exciting, she is very nice, very athletic, it was a good update in the pedigree, she is very light on her feet. She is for Godolphin."

Lot 1291:
trainer David Loughnane has been busy at Park Paddocks this afternoon buying this son of Siyouni, a grandson of the champion Islington, sold by Fittocks Stud on behalf of Amo Racing. He was accompanied by Tom Pennington of Amo Racing and the pair had to spend 290,000gns on the good-looking colt, having to fight off two persistent online underbidders.
"We thought he is the nicest horse here, an outstanding colt," said Pennington. "He didn't put a foot wrong, by Siyouni whom we love. Kia couldn't be here today but was desperate to have him. He saw him earlier in the week and fell in love with him.
"So, yes, he was the one! We have awaited all day. Luckily, we've got him – we didn't at some stages in the bidding, but we are chuffed to bits. He is the sort of horse we want to buy– he comes from a great farm and has a real pedigree."
Pennington added: "We have found the market very tough, we have underbid so many horses, competition has been incredible."
Loughnane, who is looking forward to training this horse, said: "I am delighted to be bringing home, he will to Ireland to be broken in and come to me in the New Year. We have got the one we wanted. ."
Aside from buying young racehorses for next year and beyond, the trainer's attention will have also be split this afternoon watching today's racing from Nottingham. There the colt King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett), owned by Amo Racing and trained by Loughnane at his Shropshire yard, won the mile EBF maiden, by 4l from the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Nader King (Camelot). The colt holds a Derby entry and has been given a 20-1 quote for the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster later this month.
(17:57)
Lot 1264:
Ballylinch Stud sells this colt by New Bay for 425,000gns to Anthony Stroud.
The colt is out of the dam Fact Or Folklore, who is by the farm's leading sire Lope De Vega. Her dam Iuturna was a Listed winner in Italy, and was bought by John O'Connor. It is a family that O'Connor supports on the racecourse – he raced the mare to win three races and finished placed at Listed level five times. He has also owned in training her 2019 colt by Make Believe called Self Belief, who has won this year.
However, it is the mare's 2018 filly by Lawman called Statement who has been carrying the flag for the immediate family. She was sold as a yearling by the farm to Dermot Farrington, and was sold again to Stephen Hillen Bloodstock at last year's Tattersalls December Sale for 300,000gns. By then she had run in the 1,000 Guineas and had also collected a Group 3 second place to Alcohol Free in the Fred Darling Stakes and a Group 3 third place in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (G3).
This year she has won the Listed Navigation Stakes and the Group 3 Concorde Stakes.
Of this colt, O'Connor said: "This horse was a beautiful horse, free-moving, well-balanced, and he took everything really well – there were a few who kicked off in the pre-parade ring and he handled it very well. He has got a racehorse mind I think.
"The trainers really like the New Bays, and with the kind of mares he is covering now he has the opportunity now to step to a higher level again. Every horse has to take that opportunity, but we believe he can. The major players are still here and they are still anxious to buy nice horses. There were plenty of bids coming for him from all over the sale ring."
Fact Or Folklore had a colt by Night of Thunder this spring.
Anthony Stroud reported that the colt was bought on behalf of owner Peter Harris, and is going into training with Jane Chapple-Hyam who "has done so well with New Bays".
(17:09)
Lot 1243:
Watership Down Stud has had a wonderful couple of weeks as a consignor at this year's October Yearling Sale (so far, the farm has sold 16 horses for a turnover of 9,516,000gns, an average price of 594,750gns and has one lot left to go sell), but the farm turned buyer for this lot going to 150,000gns for this filly Kodiac from Tally-Ho Stud.
Out of the winning two-year-old Trade Fair mare Elkmait, she is a half-sister to The Mackem Bullet (Society Rock), who won the Appalachian Stakes (G2) and finished second in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1), the Lowther Stakes (G2), third in the Mrs Revere Stakes (G2), the Princess Margaret Stakes (G3) and the Pin Oak Stakes (G3).
Watership Down's Stud general manager Simon Marsh said: "We don't often buy as yearlings but we have been keen to buy a filly with speed, a lot of the mares on the farm are more middle-distance mares. She is a lovely filly, she walks extremely well, hopefully she will be a two-year-old and she is going to John Gosden.
"It is a nice pedigree and if she performs she will be a lovely filly to have."
Of the fortnight's sales, he said: "It has been an extraordinary time for Watership and Kiltinan, last week beyond our wildest expectations. This week we have sold a very nice Frankel for 450,000gns to Saeed Suhail, which was great for breeder Andrew Rosen. All in all, it has been pretty good."
Of the strength of the market, he reasoned: "The top end of the market has been very strong, the pound is very weak, oil and gas is very expensive, there has been a lot of interest in the horses that we bred in Europe from overseas buyers. We have some fantastic stallions over here – Dubawi, Frankel, Sea The Stars, Wootton Bassett and Siyouni – an extraordinary spread of stallions and they seem to work all over the world."
(16:40)
Lot 1226:
"I thought he was the best foal here on the Saturday of last year's foal sale," recalled Michael Fitzpatrick of Kilminfoyle Stud after selling this colt by Havana Grey for 325,000gns, now the most expensive yearling by the sire sold at auction to date. "It was just the physical that particularly drew me to him last year. It was big price to give for him as a foal – it has paid off.
Fitzpatrick added: "He looks sharp, and does look a real Royal Ascot two-year-old. Havana Grey has gone from strength to strength this season, and I'd like to wish Karl Burke all the best with him – hopefully he can become the next Havana Grey!
"I would also like to say a huge thanks to all my staff – the hours and work they put in, I couldn't do it without them. It is only for them we are able to do this."
Burke, of course, trained Havana Grey and he said: "This colt is the same strong type, has a good walk to him and is very like the stallion, who has had a fantastic season. We have trained a few by him – they have been winners, hopefully this will be the best."
He added: "It has been great watching Havana Grey this year – not many first-season sires can do what he has done, let's hope it carries on!"
Lot
1233, also by Havana Grey, bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and this time sold by the farm, makes 220,000gns bought by Stroud Coleman. He is out of the winning Sidney's Candy mare Dundunah, a half-sister to Cuvee Uncorked, placed at Grade 2 level in the US.
(15:19)
Lot 1203:
becomes the most expensive yearling by first-crop sire Calyx sold at auction to date – the colt fetched 170,000gns, bought by MV Magnier.
He was a Bitzen Bloodstock foal pinhook, bought at the Tattersalls December Sale for 65,000gns. He was bred by Emma Capon Bloodstock out of Dazzling Rose (Raven's Pass), whose two-year-old of 2022 has won since the catalogue was published. Named Zicatela (Muharaar) he won at in August at Lingfield and is rated 80.
The mare had a filly foal by Harry Angel this year and was covered by Ardad.
It is the further family of Almanzor, a champion European three-year-old of 2016.
(14:13)
Lot 1190:
this chestnut filly is added to Shadwell's purchases – by Siyouni, she is out of the Dick Hern Fillies Stakes (L) third-placed Dancing Breeze (New Approach) and made 350,000gns.
She was bred by Merry Fox Stud and sold by The Castlebridge Consignment, and Bill Dwan said: "Craig Bennett and Merry Fox Stud has been a great supporter of ours, I am really pleased with this sale for him. She is a lovely filly, she looks fast and I am delighted that Shadwell have bought her."
Dancing Breeze is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Future Generation (Hurricane Run), dam of Brundtland (Dubawi), winner of the Prix Niel (G2) and the Prix Chaudenay (G2), and the Listed winner Love Child (Dark Angel), who finished second in the Prix de Pomone (G2) in August.
Dancing Breeze was bred by Merry Fox Stud, and is out of Posterity (Indian Ridge) – she was bought at the Tattersalls July Sale for 105,000gns in 2006
(13:40)
Lot 1180:
the No Nay Never consigned by Baroda Stud is bought by Charlie Gordon Watson for 325,000gns. The January 5th-born colt is out of the Sixties Icon mare Czabo, the winner of four races, including the Park Express Stakes (G3). She was also placed fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
"I am a big fan of the sire and have also bought Lot
1155 by him this morning," said Gordon Watson. "The first purchase is with Al Shaqab and they will make plans once we get through the autumn."
Czabo has had two runners and both are winners – this year's three-year-old is called Spanish, is in training with William Haggas and has won twice since September.
(13:34)
Lot 1134:
"I am very happy with that, he is the first foal out of the mare and she was a good tough racemare," said Harry McCalmont of Norelands Stud after selling the colt by Sea The Stars out of the winning and Group 3 placed Acclamation mare Cava for 300,000gns.
"I bred the mare and we bought Royal Fizz, some years ago and she was a wonderful servant for us and bred lots of black-type horses. He is going to Andrew Balding, so am very happy with that, it is so vital for an early foal to go to a good trainer. The one we sold earlier today by Lope De Vega [Lot 1128], he is going to Ralph Beckett, so I am very pleased.
"We had four Sea The Stars yearlings this year, we use him a lot, I think he is just about the best stallion around."
Grand-dam Royal Fizz, dam of the admirable 11-time winner and three-time Group 3 winner, was purchased in 2003 for 19,000gns from Ballymacoll Stud.
Cava had a No Nay Never filly this spring and was covered by Lope De Vega.
(11:41)
Lot 1113:
top pinhooking hit this morning for Church Farm & Horse Park Stud – this No Nay Never colt consigned by the team makes 360,000gns, purchased by MV Magnier having been bought as a foal at the Tattersalls December Sale for 110,000gns.
John Cullinan, who was standing with Roger Marley in the gangway to watch the horse sell, said: "It was great, we are having and up and down week so that was a good result. He is a lovely horse – we loved him here in December, he is a young May foal, but is No Nay Never out of a Galileo mare. He is a fantastic walker, has a great attitude and the sire has had an amazing year. The whole way through the year, I always thought he was our banker."
The colt was bred by Charlie Brooks out of Bright Sapphire, already the dam of six winners, including Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs), winner of the Herbert Power Stakes (G2) at Caulfield and the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (G3).
Her two-year-old of this year Attaj (Caravaggio), who is owned by HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled and trained by William Haggas, was second in an early October Newmarket maiden on his second career start and he is entered this weekend.
"He’s out of a Galileo mare and is a very good mover,” Magnier said of the purchase. “When we were down there during the week – John Cullinan was always very high on the horse, and he’s sold plenty of good ones in the past.”
Magnier and the Coolmore buying team have been typically active at yearling sales on both sides of the Irish Sea in recent weeks, with their eye-catching purchases including the Frankel three-parts brother to Broome, a 2,400,000gns buy who was signed for in conjunction with Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm.
Magnier reflected on their recent activities by saying: “We’ve got plenty of horses and this sale [Tattersalls October] has been incredible. There are plenty of nice horses here and there were plenty of nice ones in Goffs too.
"We try to keep a spread [of different stallions yearlings] and we like to support people who have supported us a lot. The dreams are always still alive at this time of year.”
